Default Acorns

Lollypop has taken to munching acorns. Are there other hounds outs there who have a particular taste for them?

Not sure they are safe for dogs!!! Best to give your vet a call to ask, to be safe.

again depends on the quanity Zephyr use to love acorns.

acorns

Ask a vet
Quote:
have good news for you...acorns are generally not toxic to dogs.

...Large animals such as horses and cows can get sick from eating acorns. This is mostly because they are likely to eat a large amount (i.e. grazing in a field with lots of fallen acorns) and also because their intestinal tracts break down the acorn.

In theory, if a dog ate a massive amount of acorns and chewed each one (i.e. to expose the stuff on the inside) then this could cause some toxicity. But, if Jammy ate a tiny amount I wouldn't be worried.
it is on the order of 6% body weight to cause toxicity in rumen given that dogs are not designed to break down plant material as efficiently it is even likely higher for them which mean they would hve to eat a lot of them

Oax Toxcity

Quote:
Symptoms usually appear shortly after cattle eat 50% or more of their diet as oak (leaves, buds, acorns). Some animals may simply be found dead. Others may appear weak and listless, without an appetite. A day or two after eating the oak leaves or buds, bloody or dark diarrhea may be noticed. As kidney failure progresses, fluid may accumulate around the anus or vulva. Throughout, the cattle appear weak, listless, and have no appetite.

My first degree is in forestry. White oak acorns are actually very good. I used to collect them and grind them for baking. They make great cinnamon rolls. My favorites were Swamp White Oaks because they were biggest. Red oak acorns are much more bitter because they contain much more tannin.

Both of mine love peanuts, they will literally shell them and only eat the nut. I was amazed when the first one did it, then we get the second one and he goes right out finds a one, and shells/eats it.

How funny that you mention peanuts, Cannoli pulled some off the table last night while I was laying down for a bit. She was shelling them and eating the nuts as well! I was amazed and tickled, even though she ate my peanuts!

Norman lovs nuts. Acorns, pecans, peanuts(out of the field) salted mixed nuts (out of can). While he was visiting my uncle's, Norman decided that the walnuts were natures tennis balls. It was not fun having to explain why his snout was dyed a greenish yellow from carring the walnuts in his mouth. Had I known about this fetish I would have named him NUTLEY!
