Gwen was set for her spaying this coming Sunday (as long as she tested heartworm neg first). And wouldn't you know? Guess who goes into heat last night?
Well needless to say, my comforter went straight in the wash this morning. I'm familiar with the dog heat cycle, but I've never actually had a dog in heat (we've always rescued, so they've always been spayed previous to our guardianship). Looks like in for a couple weeks of constant oversight and diapering. The foster coordinator now says we'll have to wait 2 months to spay her because "its safer to spay mid cycle". Do we really need to wait that long? |

I don't know about in the US, but we had Bella spayed 12 weeks after her first season, because that's as soon as the vets would do it. It's something to do with the amount of blood in the veins and if done at the wrong time can cause incontinence.
During her first season though Bella was really clean and it was in summer which made it easier because she spent the majority of it outdoors sunbathing. |

I don't know, I've read all sorts of things since but Cannoli was spayed while she was in heat. I didn't know any better but given the choice again I would wait. Our vet just charged an extra fee, which at the time seemed worth it. Coulda - shoulda - woulda!

I would wait as recommended. Gives everything time to shrink back to normal size, less chance of excessive bleeding.

I'm with the wait crowed. Even though I have had two of them spayed when they were first coming in. I wouldn't do it again even though I had no problems, I just didn't want to go through the heat thing and I knew they had just come in. When I got Marlo she was 9 months old and I wasn't sure when she started because I had only just got her and I wanted her to settle in before doing that to her.
I don't think it will matter after because she shouldn't come back in for about 6 months, so after Marlo got good and trough I waited because there was no hurry and had it done, case closed. |

They go through false pregnancies, just a question of degrees, some go through the whole gambit of after two months they get milk, you have to watch for mastitis at that point. Some never have any more signs than a little roundness of the belly.Which is why it would be smart to wait a bit after a heat to be spayed.
