Default Update - Incontience in young Basset

Hello all,

I just thought I'd give you an update (since it has been a little while). I got Maddie, my 1.5 year old Basset, into the vet last week and told the vet that due to my "online research" I was concerned that Maddie might have incontinence. I gave him a description of her actions: urinating while sleeping and/or relaxed, urinating in her crate/bed, etc.

He was shocked to hear of these issues, considering her age and wanted to do some blood work and a urine analysis to rule out any potentially more serious issues. SO $250+ and 3 separate tests later, we have reached the conclusion that Maddie is indeed incontinent.

That being said, I picked up her prescription, Proin tablets containing 25mg. The vet instructed me to give her these tablets once every 8 hours (or 3 times daily). He also said she would need to be on this dosage for the rest of her life, if it proves effective. My question now is those of you with experience with Proin - does that sound correct? Is there a way she could be on a higher dosage, milligram wise, and only take a pill once daily? Say a 75mg tablet, once daily - for example?

I was not able to speak with my vet when picking up the meds, so I many of my questions were not answered by the secretary at the vets office. Additionally, I paid $20 for #50 tablets at 25mg each. Does that price seem reasonable? Is there a more cost-effective place to get these meds?

Let me know what you Proin users think/know about the medication, if you care to share any of your knowledge.

Thank you and wish us luck with this life-long journey we are about to embark on!

Rachel and Maddie

So sorry to hear your story. Look up Doctor Fosters and Smith on line. It is alot cheaper through them. They will call your vet to get the prescription and then you get them in the mail...ask your vet if he will release the prescription to them. They are very reputable and most vets do. Proin ® (Brand)

over time youi may be able to reduce the doesage but twice a day works better than once both my dogs on it were beagles so that does not translate to basset size doseage an both started at or about the age of 2 , so while it is not common it is not unheard of as well.

Do not know if it can be done with this drug but if it is something people take you may be able to get it at the reg pharmacy if your vet will write a scripot for it. It is possibly cheaper there.

Unless the drug is a specialty drug that can only be gotten through my vets office – I now get all scripts for my fur babies filled at Wallmart – I get a full month worth for $4.00.

I don’t have any help to offer on your medical question – just wanted to let you know about the script – and to tell you we’re pull for you and her to get this problem fixed.

Did you tell the secretary that you had the list of questions to ask your vet? If not – you should call them and tell her you need the vet to give you a call. Anytime I have questions – I call – and if they’re too busy during the day – I get a call back at the end of business and they always answer all my questions. Times I’ve had to run in and pick up meds – if they can’t come out for a minute – they still call me later that same day. I couldn’t go to anyone that didn’t have the time to answer my questions personally.

Thanks for the update – slinging some healing drool your way for a successful journey…

Jen~

Abby is on certain meds for the rest of her life (not the Proin) but I get them on line and they are much cheaper than what I get at the vet.

Also, besides Walmart, I know Kroger (grocery stores, dunno if you have them out there) also do pet meds.

Sorry I have no knowledge of incontience or the meds. But wishing you both the best.

not possible PPA wha a common incredien in cold medicine and diet pill however it lead to strokes in young women. The FDA pulled it from the market place. Which made it difficult for those already using PPA for the incontinence in dogs. the type of stroke caosed by PPA do not occur in dogs so it is safe for them. compounding pharmacies still made it for select client but the price rose. When proin it the makret place with fda aproval the price dropped again certin not as cheap as the diet pill but cheaper than going through a componding pharmacy

PPA
Quote:
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to remove phenylpropanolamine (PPA) from all drug products and has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containing PPA. In addition, FDA has issued a public health advisory concerning phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride. This drug is an ingredient used in many over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription cough and cold medications as a decongestant and in OTC weight loss products.
Scientists at Yale University School of Medicine recently issued a report entitled "Phenylpropanolamine & Risk of Hemorrhagic Stroke: Final Report of the Hemorrhagic Stroke Project." This study reports that taking PPA increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding into the brain or into tissue surrounding the brain) in women. Men may also be at risk. Although the risk of hemorrhagic stroke is very low, FDA recommends that consumers not use any products that contain PPA.

Great to know! Thank you everybody for you support, well-wishes, and advice. Since we are on a trial period at the moment to make sure this medication even works for her, I will hold off on pursing "cheaper" Proin but I did check out the Doctor Foster and Smith website and found the tablets to be much more reasonably priced there!

Another thing I'm concerned about is that Maddie hasn't eaten since she has taken her first Proin dosage - almost 24 hours ago. Is that normal? I don't like the idea of her losing her appetite as she is very slender and svelte for a Basset as it is.

Thanks, Mikey. Hopefully Maddie is just not feeling hungry lately and it has nothing to do with the medication! If I can't get her to eat today, I'll mix in some plain yogurt or something, that usually gets her hound nose interested pretty quickly!
