So, we had our first earthquake since I moved to the US last night. Only a 2.4, but its epicenter was 5 miles from the house.
Did it wake me?? Nope, did it wake the pooches???? I dont believe it, but it did. They were off the bed pacing and unselltled for a good 30 minutes. I let them out, they came back in and went back to bed. Turned on the news this morning and heard the news and the time it occured....wild, how do they sense it! |

Thats amazing ...it is weird how they can sense whats to come.
I was in Japan last March during the big earthquake. Actually 2 to 3 hours before it hit I was at the zoo in Tokyo to see the Pandas which had arrived a few weeks before -- unfortunately I didn't get to see the Pandas since they were not being shown yet but did spend a couple of hours wandering around..With all that we have read about animals sensing earthquakes, tornados etc, one would think that we would have noticed strange behaviour there. We didn't ... my most vivid memory of the zoo visit (coz after the quake hit my memories are pretty jumbled for that day) are of a HUGE hippo laying on its side getting some kind of sunscreen applied to its belly with a bristle broom! I have often wondered why we didn't see any kind of unrest in the animals that day!! Since Japan has so many "mini" quakes are the animals just to used to it??? Guess I will never know!! |

Our bassets didn't feel a thing. at 9:54pm they were dozing pleasantly.
But we're a few miles further than you were from the epicenter. So weird that they can sense it. I wonder where that instinct comes from. If they were out in the open, where would they go?

We had an earthquake a few months back, the one with the epicenter in Oklahoma. I was actually voice chatting with a friend in Oklahoma at the time, and she said she was in an earthquake so I sat quietly waiting for it. I felt it, but the dogs didn't seem to notice a thing.
I know they sense storms coming based on changes in pressure, not sure how they can sense earthquakes. Different waves travel at different speeds and arrive at different times, maybe they can sense waves that we can't?

they always know
lulu used to start pacing, panting and drooling about 45 minutes before a storm would arrive. Maybe some will recall the mass animal migration inland right before that tsunami hit a couple years ago. Haiti I wanna say? |

We don't get many earthquakes in western virginia, but we did have one this summer that really rattled the office. I was at work, so I have not idea what Jake and Abby were doing before during or after.
Then again, with the way these two sleep, I would wager you could set off an ABomb in the front yard and they would continue to snore! |
