I thought I would share this since Libby's eye condition, entropion is an issue seen in the basset hound breed (as well as other breeds).
Libby is scheduled for surgery and we have requested that the vet we really like at our clinic preform the operation. As background Libby is a rescue and we adopted her last summer. She is 3 years old and has entropion in her right eye. Here is a quick definition of entropion: "Entropion is a medical condition in which the eyelid (usually the lower lid) folds inward. It is very uncomfortable, as the eyelashes constantly rub against the cornea. Entropion is usually caused by genetic factors and may be congenital.[citation needed] Entropion can also occur secondary to pain of the eye (leading to self trauma, scarring of the eyelid, or nerve damage.)" We don't know Libby's background because she is a rescue, but we assume that her entropion is a congential condition. It never seems to bother her or cause her pain. I think that the way her eye feels is all she has ever known so she may be used to it. We have waited until now to do the surgery because she was so scared and anxious when we first adopted her. We didn't want to traumatize her further with a surgery right after coming home. The eye with entropion does weep a lot. We clean lots of eye goopies from her eye everyday and also use liquid tears drops to help lubricate her eye. The treatment for entropion is surgery. Wish Libby good luck with the surgery that will happen in mid February! I am posting some current pictures of Libby's eye here. You can see how her bottom eye lid rolls inward and her lower eyelashes are wet. The last picture my hubby is pulling her lower eyelid down. The surgery should place her eyelid in that position permanently so she can live life with no pain or additional eye issues! Don't worry, after we held her captive for these pictures she was rewarded with some peanut butter. ![]() I will post post-surgery pictures when I have them! |

Have you thought about trying a pro collar istead of "the cone".
Libby might take better to it as it's more like a doughnut! I'm thinkin gof getting one for when Monty gets "done" - has anybody used them? |
