Hi guys!!!
I'm new to this site so please bear with me..... I have a 16 month old basset cross beagle, but he has been acting quite strange. Every night he starts quivering and whimpering. He then won't sit in the front part of the house and will lie in the bedroom. We have closed curtains, turned tv up and down, even turned lights on and off, but to no avail. Any one have any ideas? It's kinda freaky........ |

Welcome Woof!
The only thing that pops to my mind could there be some sort of critter that is showing up out front that he can smell and it scares him? Or maybe was there a big storm or other commotion out front right before he started this? (Actually, Ghosts came to mind.... but I think I am just watching too many of those kinds of shows )We have some great behaviorist here and I am sure they will be along and have some help to offer. |

I was kind of thinking racoons, possums, skunks, other night critters...
You'd be surprised at what spooks them... Abby is afraid of her daddy when he is in his camo... either that or she is fashion snob! |

Welcome Woof to the forum....was wondering how long you've had him. I had a beagle once who was terrified at night. She had been kenneled outside so I always figured that some animal must have terrified her when she was just a pup....had a terrible time getting her to go out in the dark....

We have had some of the same issues with our black lab. He used to sleep in our room all the time and then one night he started whimpering, panting excessively and pacing. We took him to the vet and he gave him some meds to try to calm him at night.
Needless to say it didn't work....we finally had to put him in his crate in our room and covered it with a blanket...it is the only thing that calmed him (that and a nightlight). How crazy that a 100 lb dog would be afraid of the dark. He now sleeps peacefully in our sons room (with a nightlight). ![]() Good luck with the sweet pup!!!!! If only we could read their minds!!!! |

That is really the hard part of being a Fur-Baby parent, they can't tell you (or the vet) what the problem is... just have to guess and hope we are right.
Woof, like I said, we have some great folks around here when it comes to behavior issues, but (IMHO) have you tried sitting in the front room with him when he starts to freak with positive actions? Cuddling, play, Kong full of yummies? That kind of stuff? I have little experience with dogs going into the fear area (shivering & whimpering). Abby is pretty much fear less, except for camo clothes. Jake goes there with thunderstorms, fireworks and gun shots (we are in a rural area with lots of hunting, so lots of gun shots). Jake usually tries to hide in the laundry room, 1/2 bath or hall in between... a small area, generally pretty dark. He does seem to calm down if I "make" him sit with me and I love on him (belly rubs, ear rubs, etc.) Being close to either me or my husband does seem to help, along with distractions like love, a Kong, etc... t |
