Default What do you hide your pills in?

Lightning has finally found one thing he will not eat: his Tramadol (pain med). Normally I just toss all his meds in his food and he Hoovers it all down. Now he will grab a small mouthful of kibble (and pills) and drop it on the floor so he can pick the kibble out. If he gets one of the Tramadol in his mouth, he will shake his head violently and spit it out. While it's kind of funny, I need him to take the Tramadol. I tried hiding it in his pumpkin; now he won't eat the pumpkin. So, what have you all found to make your dogs take REALLY bitter pills? I'm off to the store today, so I'll start with peanut butter and/or Pill Pockets.

At the petstore we recently found a treat that comes in two pieces: you can fill in the middle with the medicine and then stick it together - haven't tried it yet, but it looked like a good idea.

We've had to give Tramadol to clients' pets. Peanut butter did the trick. Its a lot harder for them to spit out the pills when its covered in sticky goodness. We'd give it to her right off the spoon with the pills pushed into the center.

I don't even bother trying to hide pills in anything anymore. I just open up the hatch, chuck 'em in, and make sure they have gone down.

Mine get one chance to eat it in their food, but if they don't then I just start popping them in too.

I use peanut butter, take the pill and cover it entirely, and then stick it way back in their mouth...so far it's worked. Use to stick in a piece of hot dog, but they finally learned to spit just the pill out.

If you really can't do it, ask about a different form of medication. After Gabby's surgery, she wouldn't eat her Rimadyl, and because the surgery was on her face, combined with the size of the pill, I switched her to meloxicam (liquid) instead. Or perhaps Lightning will find a different medication more palatable.

Cheese slice. I tear it in half, hide the pill in the first piece. He sees the second piece, and eats the first one without chewing in anticipation of the second piece. Works best if you warm the cheese up in your hand so it sticks better.
