Unhappy Archie's big scare tonight

So tonight I was taking Oliver to Petco and got a phone call from my mom asking if bassets get bloat/stomach flip like labs, and I told her yes they do and of course I felt like my heart dropped to my stomach... Apparently Archie had gotten into a bag of dog food and ate about a 1/2 of a gallon zip lock of puppy food >.< My mom asked if she should induce vomitting because she was literally watching his stomach expand and he was incredibly fat and he was obviously extremely uncomfortible and she was worried about bloat and his stomach flipping. I told her yes, but neither of us could think past our worry on how to do it so I told her to youtube it and I'd be home in 5 minutes. So I head home in an emotional frenzy. When i got back she was watching the youtube video (that was very helpful btw) on how to induce vomitting... Luckily we had the peroxide and syringe to do it. So I got him in my non-carpetted bedroom (it's just plain cement floors) and started forcing the peroxide down his throat. He was not a happy camper, but luckily it worked the 1st time and he threw up a ton of food and pooped out even more... He is all fine now, but very miserable and exhausted. I'm so glad he's okay, we were ready to take him to the emergency room if he didn't start getting it out.

Oh gosh I'm just waiting on Penny to pull something like that.
I hope he gets to feeling better! Poor thing.

Archie says, "I hope Penny doesn't do it and tell her that even though the food seems worth it, it's NOT! The peroxide being shoved down your throat is horrible and you end up with a major belly ache!"

I'm so glad Archie was so easy to induce vomitting for. I've trained dogs that the peroxide just would not work for at all. Tonight was so scary, I hope you don't have to go through it! I've never had to worry about that kind of thing with my other 2 bassets... They're a bit odd in that they don't really like to eat that much. Oliver is very picky and we have always had a hard time getting him to eat. Annie ever since she was a baby would chew every kibble about 10 or so times which led to a very long meal times. Archie just inhales food, so he ended up with one of those bowls that slows him down, he still eats fast, but it did help a lot. Now instead of being down in about 10 seconds it takes him a few minutes.

Peroxide works on Penny too. I found that out by accident once though. She got into the trash can after I had cleaned out my ears with some peroxide and she chewed on the cotton balls. That was a fun night.

I've been so worried about her eating so fast lately though. Uhg. I can't imagine how scary that must've been for you.

Penny was asleep last night when I read this, but she wants Archie to have a better day and feel better too.

Poor Archie, feel better quickly buddy....I have been lucky with my bassets in that regard...none of them have been kibble gulpers..people food left unattended, yes...their own food not so much, more grazers with their own..
Good info on the peroxide...will keep that info on hand and in the medicine cabinet.

Give Archie extra bellyrubs from my house....

I remember using salt, lots of it to induce vomiting on a pup I had years ago.

Would the vet have wanted vomiting induced though? Lou ate a bucket of food (neighbor's dog food he got into) and our vet just said to watch him. Of course, Lou was 85 pounds....

Thank God it turned out OK...poor pup...poor you and your mom!!

Archie is feeling much better today (thank goodness) he's still a little chubby, but he doesn't look like he swallowed a water mellon anymore
inducing vomitting, it depends on the vet, some say go for it, some say wait. It definately helped get the food out of his stomach. We were just worried about the whole bloat/stomach flip thing. We had to watch his water intake and everything and I kept watching him till he was sound asleep and I wasn't so worried anymore. It doesn't hurt to induce vomitting, I wouldn't do it everyday, but every once in a while it's not that bad. There are certain things that you shouldn't induce vomitting for, but that's mostly if it can harm them on the way up, dog food is fine though.

Poor Archie.....Chloe says to "slow down" and enjoy your food. She is kind of dainty with her eating and nibbles. It is good to hear how to induce vomiting in case there is ever a reason too. I love the info you get on here...it is very helpful!!!

Archie, glad to hear that you are on the mend. How scary for Mom and Grandma!

Fortunately, Jake (despite is appetite) nor Abby (my picky eater... as George Carlin said... Picky Eater = Big pain in the A$$) have ever had bloat issues, but I will certainly keep the peroxide in the back of my mind).

And Archie, come on... we know Momma isn't starving you to death, no need to go into eating overdrive!
