I will never purchase new living room furniture unless its too tall for a basset to jump on.
Right in front of me, Copper jumped onto the all-wood coffee table and with all fours firmly planted on the table he proceeded to furiously dig into the wood. My fault for not grinding his nails earlier. I now have fresh scratches in my wood. Oh that silly boy.

I know how you feel. Before I had bassets, I bought a stone colored couch, chair and ottoman. I have tried in vain to keep them covered so as not to be muddy or slobbery but they think the covers are there for them to lay UNDER. They dig until they can worm their way underneath them and then lay down. Needless to say my next set of furniture is going to be mud colored!

I just replaced all my furniture with leather. Best decision ever I just wipe the mud off and sweep off the hair. I could not imagine if I had cloth furniture especially when my husband just lets him in with muddy feet.

I think I have said this before but I guess I am pretty lucky or Paisley is just too too short ... she has never tried to get on the furniture... we do allow her on one chair (have to hoist the butt up)and only put her up if she whines and gives her Dad the stink eye.... other than that she is content to sleep in her bed in the kitchen or the one in front of the fire place. She does dig to China on the family room carpet every chance she gets. I think we are blessed after our last dog a Springer who we would find on the kitchen table, my dresser and everything else he chose to "spring " on!!!

OMG - I'm so sorry I can't help but laugh at this - I can just imagine your face in watching him do this. Lucy is like Paisley digging to china in the carpet and it's a hoot watching her do it - I almost feel sorry for her - with all the moaning and crying she does.
On a serious note - I hope he didn't do too much damage and it can be fixed with one of the wood treatment that are out. I'm also with Barney & Ed - best thing I ever did was the leather furniture - the key in getting leather if you have dogs - get the best quality you can afford. If you buy the more inexpensive leather there's not enough give to it and their nails will puncture it - but the more expensive is like butter and it gives with their nails. Jen~

I'm firmly in the leather camp, wipe it off and sweep of the hair it has been the best investment we've ever made. Our dogs are all over the furniture so it was a must for us.

So why do they dig to China through the carpet? Bella is a monster for it, then she gets real mad at the carpet.
I'm used to worry about my pure wool carpet, until hubby suggested we go for wooden floors, which is what we're in the process of now, so I suppose she'll just dig to China on the new rugs I'm planning. I'm looking for a leather sofa now, as Bella has decided that ours wasn't the right design and tore a hole in the front of it, obviously it looks so much better to her now, seeing as she's claimed the sofa for her bed, and will sleep in all morning on it if she gets the chance. I sometimes just see the blanket with a nose rising up, otherwise you wouldn't know she was there. |
