Default swollen foot pad

Riley's back foot pad is really swollen It is the big part of the pad. I don't feel anything in or around it and he doesn't whine when I mess with it. Should I give him something to reduce the swelling or should I put something on it?? It looks like it would be painful. Any ideas? I hate to take him to the vet if he just bruised it on something....

How's he doing? If it was a human i'd say keep it elevated, but you can't do much more than compression for a dog. Make sure there's no little bite mark, like maybe he got bit by some bug. If the swelling goes any higher, seek out a vet right away.

How's the pad now, any better?

Could a thorn or something got in there/puntured it? Shame

Personally, I would have it looked at.

Above all don't let him lick it. Go have it checked out as soon as you can, they'll most likely prescribe a topical cream and a gentle wash with hygienic cotton buds with a follow-up a week later.

If the vet identifies it as a cyst...ask for a second opinion, cause treating it as such will make it a lot worse if they're wrong.

From the "licking....." Thread:

Just imagine trying to heal an open wound on the bottom of a dogs leg, without a pad to keep it elevated and dry.

His paw/leg/life was saved by our vet who did absolutely everything right and instructed us on how to heal a seemingly impossible wound.
As for the state of the pad, once the swelling went down a couple of inches didn't seem all too bad. In fact I have trouble telling which paw it was thanks to the fur growing over the affected area.

Long story short, monitor her.

I'm with everyone else here - I would have it looked at . For the last few years I've had a problem with Lucy's paws - sometime they get so bad they look like hamburger meat. We have a few things we treat them with - sometime she needs to dreaded - collar of shame - sometime I use a new born baby's sock to cover it if she's going to be in the same room with me. I posted photos of what they look like a while ago.

Personally - I wouldn't recommend anything to put on - because you really should know what it is first. I will say - do your best to keep him from licking - and keep it as dry as possible - drying it off as soon as he come in from outside.

Please keep us posted after you go to the vet - and best of luck to you and him.

update on Riley's pad. The swelling has gone down and it doesn't seem to bother him. I didn't take him to the vet since it seems like it is getting better. It almost feels harder than the other foot pad though. He has to go into see the vet in the next couple of weeks for heartworm so I will ask about his pad then. The whole deal seemed so random but I guess he could have stepped on something. Thanks for the quick replies

Good to hear Rileys foot is feeling better. You're right best to ask about it when you're in just in case there's something in there that might flare up again. It's always such a worry when something appears to happen for no reason.

He's lucky you worry
