Default Basset as a logo

So I'm starting up an at-home pet sitting business on the side. I've got my business name and am starting working on the legal end.

But the fun part is the design! I'm thinking of using Copper as my logo. I love the stylistic work of Outside Peg on Etsy and she does do logos starting at $100. I'm thinking basset hound with a crown. (Our business name is royalty themed.)

Any ideas on how to incorporate the basset into design? Copper thinks he's king of the couch anyway. I may be playing up to his ego. Arooo!

How about Copper sitting on his big throne wearing his jeweled crown – and all the other doggies sitting around him looking up in awe? I don’t know – I don’t know, might be too busy.

I don't have any ideas of the laws in ILL. However, if you are going to us a photo or drawing of Cooper as a logo, I would have it registered as a trademark/service mark. Also for any particular group of wording of a "sentence" or "slogan".

I have registered this in Virginia for businesses, but I do not know what ILL laws are, you may want to look into it, or consult an attorney.

Also, I don't want to suck the enjoyment out of your business venture, but you may want to look into your local laws on any liability factors. For example, what is the best entity set up to protect you from any liability (sole proprietor, LLC, or Inc) You need to think of the worst case actions for a dog under your care/control and how it could impact you financially, I am NOT an attorney, but I do have some knowledge in this area. Just trying to give you things to think about.

I am only saying this because I would hate to see you start a business (with the best intentions and thinking it would be a fun way to make some money). Hell, I would love to spend my days surrounded by dogs! But if one of the dogs in your care hurt a person or another dog, you could be looking at liability. You will need to make sure you are personally protected, and if the absolute worst happens, you are not liable where you could lose everything(ie... your home)

I don't know what lawyer cost in your area, but it might be worth an hour or so of discussion to look at these possibilities, just in case.

I am not trying to freak you out, just don't want to see you get burned for good intentions.

I am 100% with you. I've been working on the legal side of things, figuring out legal organization of the business, costs of insurance and bonding, veterinary release forms, pet first aid certification, etc. We're starting off now with pet sitting (I already work in the industry with my day job), but am looking into offering different services than my current business provides. We're doing a slow start...we're in NO rush and we want to do this right legally and financially. In 5-7 years, we're hoping to open a kenneling business of our own...that's a whole other deal to research and startup.

You have to post the final logo when you get it – how exciting for you. Just an idea on the topic of protecting yourself – do you have a land trust?

Will post when its complete--prolly a month or so.

Also, don't land trusts mostly apply to nonprofits?

No not at all – We’ve had a land trust for years. We don’t own anything – our trust owns everything. Here’s a good link for some info. If you don’t have an attorney that specializes in them – let me know – I can pass on a name and number to you.
