Default What we hope our neighbors don't find out...

Here's a thought....what is the one thing we as Basset parents do that others would think as a little off...

Let me share....when Woody was brought home at 7 weeks....it was cold Dec. His first bath I gave him in the sink and couldn't keep him from drinking the water...where he got a little tummy ache. A few weeks later, I was in the bath (large garden tub) when he is whinning and crying to get with me...he needed a bath so, brought him in. Sat him on my lap (like I did with my own children when they were babies). Bathed him with not even a whimper and dried him off with warm towels...after which I jumped in the shower and we were all good......lets just say that he took a lot of baths with ma......as crazy as that sounds....for some reason Romeo would try to get in and so has Paris...so the trend continues..

Ok, everyone share your "secret" crazy furbaby story.....

See everyone that knows us knows that we are totally crazy so we really don't have any secret behaviors. Our dogs are spoiled enough that we allow them to sit on the furniture without being moved, while we go sit on the ottoman or in the other room. Layla is certainly the princess. She has us trained to lift her up onto the couch, bed, chair or any other place she definitely capable of jumping up to on her own. All she has to do is give us the "look" and we come over and lift her. We also bought a house to fit our dogs specifications (aka no stairs). So yeah we're that kind of crazy!

How about another bath story – Before Lucy we had a rescue basset named Hank – he was what they called a freeway throwaway dog – someone dropped him off on the freeway. They didn’t know the exact reason of what happened to his legs – but his back legs didn’t move at all – they were stick straight. He could walk and run – but without bending his legs. It was because of his legs that my hubby wanted him because a couple years before my hubby was hit by a car as a pedestrian and almost lost one of his legs and couldn’t walk at all for a year.

So every night hubby would take Hank into the Jacuzzi for physical therapy and when they were done in there he would spend more time working out his legs. And again before bed then put him down in his heated bed. He did everything for Hank that we did for his legs to heal – and kept saying that one day Hank would walk like he did.

Jen,
That is such a beautiful story of love and devotion....I too have a no stair house for the furbabies....I have wood steps as long as the bed for the babies to get on and off easy. they also are on the furniture and we will sit around them. Heck I have gone out to the chair to sleep when the boys would stretch out and I felt like a tetris trying to shape around them, only to have them follow me to the chair and sleep with me there.....and I have an electric throw that the dogs love and use and have looked into the heated pet beds thinking that they would love it, but heck they sleep with me so not sure who would use it LOL

I know what you mean – when Flash and Lucy were young and before Flash broke her back they both use to sleep with me in bed – and I can remember a lot of nights that I just moved down to the floor to finish out the night because they both had to sleep diagonally which of course left no room for me – and when I’d wake up – I’d wake up to them both being down on the floor with me.

I don’t know if it’ll help Kristi but I still give Mable two kisses at a time – one for her and one for Flash along with an extra big hug for them both. It’s so hard isn’t it? I’m so sorry.

Hugs,
Jen~

It is...last morning, Paris always goes with me to drop the kids off at school and of course pick them up, I pulled in the garage and looked over at her on the seat beside me.....I just held her little face and kissed her neck and ears just talking to her and her brothers and crying....tell her how happy I am to have her in my life and thanking Woody and Romeo for bringing me such joy while they were with me and thanking them for leading me to Paris.....I feel cheated that I had so little time with them....but I never took a day for granted....I thanked God everyday that I had them...and realized then how blessed I was. Maybe I knew it would be short somehow...so I lived in the moment with them....I couldn't have loved them anymore than I did...and I made sure they knew how I felt everyday and how much they brightened my life just by being in it.

Ummm...what is this wet stuff coming out of my eyes!!! Geez...

Maybe this is odd, maybe not. But once Annie goes to bed at night (her crate is in my room right next to my bed) I turn the TV on for her and do not return or allow anyone to enter my room until I go to sleep. I hate disturbing her..as though she doesn't get enough sleep LOL. Even if it's time for our morning walk, if she is sleeping I will rearrange all plans so I don't have to wake her.

They do brighten our life – I always say they are the only things in my life that every single day – can make me smile and laugh out loud. That every time I walk into a room their eyes light up. Their minds aren’t filled with all the clutter ours are – and they live every day as if the sun’s shining and they found the pot at the end of the rainbow.

Woody, Romeo and Flash all knew how much we loved them – and I’m sure as Flash brought me here to find Mable – they brought you to your little Paris. Just wait till some of their traits start to come through her. Mabel has been giving me a few goosebumps that last few week or so. Our bedroom is on the second floor and when I’d go downstairs with Flash she would walk down with me and if I stopped on every step on the way down she would stop with me and hit me on my leg and look up with a what did we stop for look - Well, this week Mabel started doing it – the first time she did I froze – she’s walked down this way for a week now. It’s amazing.

I’ve also started feeding her blocked off in the family room this week – and just this week she started to grunt and throw her bowl across the room just like Flash use to do. I’m sure there’s a thread somewhere on here that I described how she use to do it – and that I had to feed her on a weighted tray so she couldn’t throw it – what’s amazing, she’s not just tipping it – or not just throwing it – she’s grunting and throwing it – then going to eat the food off the carpet just like my girl did.

I know they’re still with us helping us find our way without them – I just have to believe it.

Oh, thank you for the laugh out loud - and I have to say - there is absolutely nothing wrong with you – I do the same thing. All plans I make are made around their sleeping schedule. Even when we only go out for a night – a lot of times a neighbor will come over and watch TV with them so they’re not alone. I refuse to believe there is anything wrong with this as some people have implied.

Oh I have seen flashes of them in her.....like her hunting down and taking Woodys favorite toy, a blue monkey....which is now her favorite....or whimpering when I kiss her neck in the morning, just like Woody used to....the first time she did this, I bawled like a baby as I was kissing her. We had Jerrett's mom live with us the last few years before she passed...and she was a crazy dog lady just like me (in fact that's how I inherited Victor the chihauha). The night after the boys died, the storage room where her belongings still are was open even though no one went inside and a truck was in front of the double doors...and a light was off that never had been turned off (difficult to get to to be able to turn off)....I know that she was letting me know that the boys were safe with her. It gave the boys dad and me comfort knowing this. That they were with Grandma and she was spoiling them rotten.

Thank you Jen, for sharing with me...it helps to talk and share some of this with you...
