Default Chocolate

So I have a question. On one of the other threads, someone had posted about giving their dog whopper-like things (I think you called them maltesers or something like that?). Anyways, I'm NOT wanting to start a debate or anything. I'm just curious because I thought chocolate was extremely toxic to dogs, but I know a couple of you allow it now and then.

I don't really foresee giving my dog chocolate and I am not a fan of Whoppers (I know, do I still get to stay on the forum...pretty please?), but I'm a nut whenever the kids have chocolate. I keep Maemae out of the room until I have swept up every last morsel when the kiddos are done because I'm so afraid that she could get hurt.

So with chocolate is it that certain types are toxic and certain types are not? Or that it's toxic in large doses, but not small doses? If I don't need to be a spaz everytime there's a chocolate crumb on the floor, that would be good information to have. If you have any other info. about dogs and chocolate, I'm all ears.

Also, feel free to pm me if you don't want to give your opinion openly!

I’m sure someone will come along with more detailed info – I’m only sharing a life experience with it and my kids – which makes me like you – nuts about keeping it away from them.

Years ago both Flash and Lucy got into a box of chocolate caramel candy – the reaction they “both” had to the chocolate is it completely blocked their urinary tract where they couldn’t go potty. It was too scary for me to want to relive. So again for me personally, I don’t let them anywhere near the stuff –

It was Monty who liked the malteasers! They are small sphere of honeycomb covered in chocolate. To be fair he really doesn't get them too often but I don't mind giving him the odd one. He enjoys them so much. I know I shouldn't.....

My last dog also had occasional chocolate and was fine. I'd never leave them alone with a bag though!

What is a whopper? Over here it's a burger.

Did anyone know raisins were poisonous to dogs - I didn't know until I was speaking to someone whose dog was really ill and it was suspected he'd eaten some!

From The Merck Veterinary Manual, here are approximate Theobromine levels of different types of chocolate:
  • Dry cocoa powder = 800 mg/oz
  • Unsweetened (Baker's) chocolate = 450 mg/oz
  • Cocoa bean mulch = 255 mg/oz
  • semisweet chocolate and sweet dark chocolate is = 150-160 mg/oz
  • Milk chocolate = 44-64 mg Theobromine per oz chocolate
  • White chocolate contains an insignificant source of methylxanthines.
The toxic dose of Theobromine (and caffeine) for pets is 100-200mg/kg. (1 kiliogram = 2.2 pounds). However, according to the poison control center at the ASPCA, problems have been noted at doses much lower than this - i.e. 20mg/kg. Translated to a "typical" scenario, and using the 20mg/kg as a measure of "problems can be seen at this level of ingestion", a 50 pound dog would have to consume 9 ounces (+/-) of milk chocolate to consume the 20mg/kg amount of Theobromine.
It takes a lot of milk chocolate to be toxic. Harley has eaten an entire bowl of "fun size" chocolates and was fine. Anabelle did the same thing and threw up once but was okay.

Whoppers are malted milk balls covered with a chocolate-flavored coating produced by The Hershey Company. The candy is a small, round ball about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. They are typically sold either in a small cardboard candy box, in a larger box that resembles a cardboard milk carton, the “Fun Size” variety which is a tube-shaped plastic package sealed at the sides, containing twelve Whoppers weighing 21 grams (0.75 oz), or the even smaller variety of a tube containing three Whoppers weighing 6.8 grams (0.23 oz).

And for more info – and photos of what they look like here is a link for you.

Why take the risk sugar is not good for your dog at all. My dogs have numerous times over the years gotten into chocolate but I would not intentionally give it to them. There are alot of safe things to treat you dog with. The only acceptable chocolate is carob not bakers or dark chocolate.
