Default Best food to feed my Basset

My family and I have just inherited a 4 year old female Basset. She is the sweetest dog ever. What is the nest type or brand of dog food to feed her?? Is it normal for a Basset to shed like crazy? She also has a habit of getting up at 2 a.m. to go potty. How many times a day should she poo?? To me 3-5 times a day seems much. My other 2 dogs go twice a day to poo. Any advice is much appreciated.

HI and welcome!

The best type and brand of food to feed your little angel is whatever type or brand of food that she does best on. That's just about the easiest way to put it. That being said, my Annie is on Rotations (mail order only) and is doing very well.

Yes, Bassets shed a LOT. Usually a big coat blow twice a year but also intermittent shedding is normal. She may also shed more if she is stressed.

When Annie was on a cheaper food with fillers in it she pooped a lot. Now 2-3 is her normal. 3-5 times per day may just be what is normal for your gal.

We LOVE pictures!!!

Hi DaisyMom....there's alot of good dog foods out there...am sure the people on this forum will head you on the right road. I feed mine Chicken Soup for the soul....it's on the high end but not the top...so not as expensive. It could be that she is still adjusting and is why she is getting up at 2am. What kind of food is she now eating....that may have alot to do with how many times she poops....the better the food, the less poop. They are shedders, although mine doesn't seem to shed much right now...must be the cold weather. Would love some pictures.

I feed my dogs a raw diet. I have some links on my page. If you have any questions feel free to pm me. I will steer clear of this unless some untruths are posted about my diet.

There is no "best" food. Some foods are better than others, but every dog is an individual.

Bassets shed like mad, and twice a year they shed even more.

Her pervious owner had her on Ol Roy(Wal-Mart brand dog food) which I hate. I have started switching her over to Purina all Natural dog food. Our sweet Daisy has always gotten up at 2 a.m even agt her old home to go potty(poo). She seems to be adjusting very well to living with us now. She stays glued to my 10 year old son. I will post some pics of them later today hopefully. We look forward to many many happy healthy years with Daisy.

Lol. The better kibble with less fillers the smaller and less poop you will see. Sometimes over feeding can cause this too.

Haha...yes...no matter what you do...it will likely be a step up. I feed Canidae all life stages kibble and I vary the wet food that I mix with it. I really think every dog is different. While I definitely think super cheap is that way for a reason and probably not the best, I also feel that there can be pressure to get the absolute best out there (not talking about this board - I mean in general). Personally, I think there's probably good choices that will fit just about any budget. So I would start there and make your decisions based on that. I do try to steer clear of things with added colorings and such.
