Default Advice Needed

Ok so I know we have had threads on this in the past but I am still trying to figure out what I should do in my case...Tito is about seven months old now and I am considering having him neutered. I am wondering how you all feel about the risks vs. the rewards of this. Here there are dogs everywhere but none of them are neutered. I am considered about this mostly because they only two dogs that play with Tito are female and because the male dogs here are pretty aggressive.

I know we talked about the negatives of neutering at 6 months in another thread but do you guys think these concerns outweigh these negatives? I am not sure what to do so I am just looking for some opinions here!

For me personally – it’s not even a question of if I’m going to have a male dog neutered, it’s a question of when are his parts going to drop so I can get him in for a snip, snip. Again, this is just me personally, I feel unless an owner is going to breed their male dog, it’s irresponsible to not snip them. Again just my option, because of all the dogs that are put down and walking the streets to the aggression that can develop. There are other reasons – but I think these two are my top reasons.

Good luck in your decision.

Best Friends Animal Society - No More Homeless Pets Forum: Pediatric Spay/Neuter

Quote:
Many veterinarians claim that prepubertal spay/neuter is not safe for dogs and cats. They argue that anesthesia and surgery on these pets carries a higher risk. This is true, if prepubertal kittens and puppies are treated like small adult patients, which they are not. Prepubertal puppies and kittens respond much differently to anesthetic agents and anesthesia than do older animals. Among other things, puppies and kittens are much more sensitive to hypothermia, hypoglycemia and many anesthetic agents. If these differences are recognized and addressed, however, these animals can be altered just as safely as older pets.
At the shelter I volunteer at, dogs are neutered at the earliest possible age, by adoption at 8 weeks. Age is not a limiting factor anymore; all that matters is their weight, and dogs 2 lbs heavy are big enough. Harley was neutered by 6 weeks, is now 11 years old, and I have never experienced any of the problems people claim to have with early neutered dogs.

I also do not see a reason to keep a dog intact that is not planned as a responsible breeder's stud.

I rather enjoy being able to rub Harley's belly without being greeted by bulky disgusting mature man parts.

I have always spayed neutered my dogs at 6 months. However after seeing how the health benefits outweight the risks I am not going to neuter Barney until at least 16 months. I firmly believe the hormones are there for a reason and greatly impact their development. I however would not recommend this to everyone it is totally dependent on who the dog owner is. I do not feel I am being irresponsible at all he will be neutered just not at 6 months. There is a wealth of info out there you need to make the decision you are comfortable with. Here is a link explaining why to wait.

I personally do not neuter males, whether they will be bred or not.

personally If I were nutering It would not be at least till maturity 14-18 month if at all. Behavuioral issues with being intact are not prevented by nuetering early there is the same rate of behavioral issue of this type in earlier nueter dogs vs dogs nueter after the behavior started if it is purely sex hormone related nueter will fix it if it is realted to something else then nuetering will not help either early or later. The bulk of the health risk fall on the side of keeping intacted. There are social issue and other that are important to consider as well. that is if playing with females are the females spayed? chance of accidents. etc.

Such a (for a better word) controversial topic, so many opinions. I agree with houndmomma. I have never had any issues, with my 4 males in their lifetimes! I choose to do it to prevent the unwanted pet population!

I am just worried because none of the dogs are spayed here but it seems like new evidence is saying better to wait

that skew considerations. it means more supervision less or no off leash activities etc There is no single right answer for every situation.

there are other more effective ways to do this than nuetering. Spaying can have a dramatic impact on pet population Nuetering not so much it requires to high of a compliance rate to make a difference

Well, I have a female so I can't say yes or no for you, but IF you should decided to neuter I would do it once he has reached maturity, as Mikey said, between 14-18 months. I spayed my little one at about 4 months and at that point we took a step backward in potty training, and now she might be facing incontinence issues. (Something far less common in male dogs, I think?) However, I can't help but wonder if my choice to spay her at such a young age ended up having a negative impact.

From the research I've done on the difference between "fixing" or not "fixing" a pet, be it male or female, the answers are pretty 50/50 as far as health concerns and potential ill effects of choosing one way or the other. I think it is more responsible to neuter him, but as mentioned above, you can certainly prevent "accidents" by simply keeping a leash on him (which is best for most Bassets anyway) or being cautious during off leash activities - which we, as dog owners, should be anyway! I think it's a totally personal choice and either way, you and your little guy will be just fine. :-)

Let us know what you decide!
