Smile new addition to the family....and iv a few questions :-)

lady is our new addition to the family, a beautiful basset!! however i do have a few questions to ask.
1) how heavy is she supposed to weight- she is currently 10.9kg and is 4 months old, she doesnt look fat at all and is not skinny, she just looks normal however nearing 2 stone already!. how much should she be eating?
2) she is always hungry & thirsty- and will continue to eat/drink until the bowls are empty- the vet said not to be worried however it does cause me concern
3) iv only ever seen her sleep once (now i am obviously assuming she sleeps in the night) is this nomal?? she is always hyperactive.
4) any tips on toilet training and where to sleep?

thankyou!! :-)

Bassets vary in size. One of mine is healthy at 40 pounds and the other is healthy at 55 pounds.

They will both continue to eat indefinitely. Anabelle ate an entire loaf of bread last week when I wasn't looking. So that is normal. You have to watch what they eat because they definitely don't have any self control.

Tito is always looking for food! Try to look at what the bag says but you have to also pay attention to how quickly they eat it and their size to figure out how much food you should be giving. I know there have been threads on how much food to give in the past!

I know Tito was pretty dang active at four months he would get up we would go for a walk and then play for an hour he would normally sleep for two hours get up for lunch we would do some training and play for thirty minutes and then go play in the park for two hours every night!

I reccomend either crate training or having a small room you can put her in I am talking bathroom sized if you can not be watching her...in general if Tito was playing pretty actively he would need to go out about every 25 minutes at that age or every hour if he was lounging around also I would watch when she is drinking alot and take her out about 20 minutes after that! Food rewards work great for Bassets! Post pics!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your new puppy. Barney never took very many naps either...still doesn't. As far as feeding, really depends on which food you are feeding it. The bag should give you a good idea...but better yet, since it's not fat or thin, you're doing it right. My vet told me twice that you can't feed a puppy too much but to make sure that level off at around 5 months. With bassets, that still sounds like risky advice. Please post some pictures....we love pictures.

skinny is better than normal for a puppy to prevent orthopeadic problems seeDog Diet Do's and Don’t's

According to Dr. Tony Buffington, Professor of Clinical Nutrition, Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, your puppy can be fed a regimen of specific caloric intake compared to his body condition score (BCS), using a simple one to five scale, from overly thin to obese. Using manufacturer feeding recommendations as an initial starting point, feed your puppy to a score of two and maintain this weight until he's fully grown. Feed

...

2 = Thin - Ribs easily palpated and may be visible with no palpable fat. Tops of lumbar vertebrae visible. Pelvic bones less prominent. Obvious waist and abdominal tuck.
3 = Moderate - Ribs palpable without excess fat covering. Abdomen tucked up when viewed from side. [/URL]

how much should she be eating?
Depend on the dog food and the individual dogs matabilism you will need to make adjustment every week or two based on the dogs BCS see link above. As a starting point most large breed puppy food have recommendation for feed on the bag based on dogs weight and age. I would recomend starting of at 20% less than the minimium recoommend. That is because as a breed basset have the largest bone mass of any breed. That is bone comprises a higher precentage iof their total weight. Bone does not require much energy so as such basset compared to other breed of the same weigh need less food. For example my harrier and basset weigh nearly identical and if anything the basset is slightly more active. However the Harrier requires nearly twice as much food as the basset.

she is always hungry & thirsty-
at least the huingry part is the nature of the breed I believe it is part of the selective breeding process for all scent hiound because everyone of them that is all the scent hound breed to not apear too have a "full button" Think of it this way to dogs of equal skill and abilitty. Ont that gets full after eating a meal one that doesn 't Which dog is going to be the more persitent hunter after breakfast , the dog that is full or the one that is still hungry? Scent hounds will eat till their belly is so big their feet don't touch the ground. They simply do not get full.
I have seen some certainly not all try and satisfy themselves with water when food is not available.

basset puppy are very active even adult dogs are however as they mature they tend to take one the activity level of the rest of the household.

Best article on the web on housetraining
House training Your Puppy

the other area housetraining ussuallt hit a snag is having the dog let you know when it need to go out. Rather than hope the dog figures out a signal that you will not ignore it is often easier to simply teach the dog a signal to use. One of the easiest to teach is to Ring a Bell

Hi Lady’s Momma and welcome to the basset world and Cyberhound. As Jnfr said – there are a lot of good topics on training along with the links Mikey gave you. Just wanted to say hi and I can’t wait for some photos.

I think my pup was 30 something pounds at that age – she’s eight months now and over 50 pounds – I have another senior hound that’s 75 pounds.
