Default The excitement of owning bassets AND bunnies!

So, I own 2 young bunnies... aaaaand 3 bassets (some people call me crazy, I say it's part of my charm)... So before today we've kept the bunnies in a small animal cage, but they are getting big and it's been startin to get kinda squishy in their cage. Yesterday my goats (I have 2 of them) chewed through the side of their pen, so we had to re-build it. We made their pen bigger (since they're getting pretty big too) and since it was so much larger I figured, "hey why not put the bunnies in there". Well, we did a quick pen building thing so it wasn't totally finished so the bunnies could run out if they wanted to. (I was tired, so I wasn't thinking well.) So my one basset (who isn't the smartest cookie in the jar, but has the strongest instincts of the 3) saw/smelled the bunnies and went NUTS! He had such a grand 'ol time! He would bark/bay/howl at the bunnies until they'd run out of the pen and then he'd chase them around the backyard until they ran into the laundry room (which only had an opening big enough for a bunny and NOT a basset) So he'd run around and around barking and barking around the laundry room. Eventually my other 2 joined in on the running and barking and eventually the teacup poodle that I'm fostering joined in as well (she could care less about the bunnies but hey, it looked fun!) So then I'd go get the bunnies out of the laundry room (easy to find them since Archie would enthusiastically tell me exactly where they were!) and put them back. Eventually I just patched up the hole in the old goat pen and put them in there (where they couldn't get out) and they were happy and the Archie had a nice well deserved nap time. It was quite a bit of fun, and highly entertaining. In the end of the day, the goats got a nice much larger pen, the bunnies got the goat's old pen which is insanely big for them, and the bassets got excercise! w00ts!

I could only imagine if I had bunnies my doxies would go crazy. My beardie was running around the other day Baarney was watching from behind the gate. He was really howling and and intently watching. If they are just basking in the window my dogs do not pay anu attention but when they start moving all three dogs get very excited. Their prey instinct seems to kick in.

With all the wildlife around here, I've never seen any bunnies in the yard...alot of chipmunks and squirrels....Poor Barney tries, but he'll never even come close. He's not sneaky or fast....now my beagle....that's another story.

YOU should have gotten that on video!!!

When I was a kid our neighbors had a HUGE white rabbit that would escape its hutch and into our yard on occasion. Our doxie, Beau, was scared to death of the rabbit, and the rabbit would chase him around the yard. (Note to self... find and scan photo)

Up until xmas day, we had a French lop bunny called Bert, he had the run of the garden in the summer, and Bella avoided him like the plague. She would go hunt him down, then tell me where he was, then run like the clappers when he grunted and thumped. It's funny since he's gone she still goes hunting for him, and I found her laying in his hutch the other day.

I really should have gotten a video! I didn't think about it until afterwards though. I'd love to see that picture though! That sounds awesome!

I know I have the picture somewhere, just a matter of digging thru old photo albums... it is from the early 70's after all!

This was a HUGE rabbit... made Beau look like a tiny! Of course, Beau was a really strange dog. He was also "in love" with the poodle next door (another male) had a path worn along the fence where grass would never grow.

Then again, he was also very protective of me as a baby. Wouldn't let anyone near me (other that mom and dad) when I was in my stroller or play pen.
