I am new here and just got a male basset puppy who is 10 weeks old. New to this breed and not sure if this is normal. He drinks so much water that afterwards I take him out maybe 10-15 mins later he goes potty and when we come back in he goes on the floor 5 mins later. Take him back out he goes outside again, then when we come back inside maybe another 5-10 mins later he pees on floor again. I did take him to vet yesterday to see if he had a bladder infection becuase he was peeing so much. Doc went ahead and put him on antibotics so I hope that helps. It just gets a little frustrating with the amount pee I am cleaning up all day! Any advice and help would be great thanks!

Did he test positive for an infection is that why they put him on antibiotics. This behavior is totally normal for a 10 week old puppy. I did scheduled watering with barney. They are so new to everything they sometimes don't empty their bladder all the way. I would put the bowl down a few times a day then at 7 no more water. Mikey usually posts some good info on potty training a bit more organized than my ramblings.

basset puppies are slow to mature snd gain sphincter control vs other breeds., It is IMHO why the are natoriously hard to housetrain. never seen a basset truely housetrained before 6 months and 1 year is typical. keep in mind a lack of accidents is not an indication of housetraining only the first step. It is an indication that adequite management is in place for housetraining to begin. |

he did not test him, just went ahead and put him on the meds. He is a very active puppy. Just frustrating like to night I put him in crate while I cleaned up potty and he went in his crate. Then took him outside and he went again, Brought him in cleaned crate and he went on floor. but him back in crate to clean floor and he went in crate again. just seems like everytime I turn around he is going potty.

Get ready for a long haul....I got my sweet little girl when she was 10 wks old and she is now 9 months old. She has been very hard to train and believe me we took her out all the time. I will say she knows to go to the door but if you are busy and aren't right there then she will go on the floor. These times are few and far between now but I am ready for the day when I don't have to worry so much.
I helps that they are so dang cute......it is so hard to get upset at them because they just have to look at you with those oh-so-cute eyes!!!! |

All I can offer is luck and I can tell you that this is totally normal. My little one (now 20 months old) used to need to go out at LEAST every half an hour - even when she was 8 months old. After a year or so she got much better. I know that sounds like a long time, but you can do it! Trust me, it is SO worth it in the end!
The other day at the dog park, I was having a conversation with a fellow dog owner who mentioned that her dog was "a pain in the ass sometimes" and I said, "yeah, Maddie is a pain in my ass all the time. But she's MY pain in the ass!" And it's so true! :-) Good luck! It gets better. And as someone else recommended, limit water intake a little more. |

Just a thought... when you take him out, do you bring him in right after he pee's the first time? He may need more time to explore and find a New spot. I know my Jake (even at 11 yo seems to find it necessary to pee in several spots, one after the other, before he is "done". )

hellooo.
i had the exact same problem with my lady. she is 4 months old, i had her from when she was 6 weeks old. and right from go we stuggled. its my first basset hound, and iv had dogs all my life- and been a breeder- but this was a whole new ball game!!! HOWEVER- there is hope!! i decided to 1) give meal times so meal and water twice a day and a some water after walks, this is to help regulate the 'motions' and give routine. 2) give great praise and a treat after peeing outside. now i do admit i am going through ALOT of treats- but also alot less kitchen paper!! haha! hope it helps |
