Default Frustrated

First off this is going to be a multi-part question thread. Get ready!!!
So for the last couple of mornings when i've been taking Napoleon out to do his business I can't for the life of me seem to get him interested into getting back into the house. It used to be that he wouldn't want to come out and as soon as I went back in toward the house he came running too. Now he just stands there and looks at me like i'm an idiot and walks around the backyard. I will call and call, walk around with him, and try everything but he will not come inside until I either drag him in or I stand at the door and let him do his rounds. Along with this he has started to eat his "deposits" again after being broken of that as a puppy. I've tried to read up on it and i've gotten everything from maybe he's not getting enough food (I really don't see how that's possible) to maybe he just likes the taste so much he wants seconds. As far as it goes he seems to me to be very healthy he's almost a year and he's right at 50 lbs. He's as strong as an ox and gets regular walks. He'll be going in for a check up soon, but I really don't think that there is anything "wrong" health wise to cause this.
The second part I guess will be that also the few mornings there have been rabbits in the back yard (or as Napoleon sees it the most bestest thing in the world if I could only catch it). He'll usually stalk it for a second then take off after it but this morning as he was chasing it he was yelping almost crying as he was running and losing ground. He seemed to be walking fine afterward and I checked all paws and legs and he didn't seem to have any discomfort. I guess i'll just keep an eye on him and let the vet know whenever we get him in for a check up. I hope he was whining because the rabbit was running too fast and he just wanted to play with him.
Sorry for the long post with multiple questions I really don't know whats up with him, he'll do anything you say if he thinks or knows you have a treat in your hand, but look at you like you're and giant alien rabbit if you don't. I'd really like some help with this especially with the "deposits" the worst part is that he'll take one and when you tell him no or drop it he thinks your playing with him and will start running around playing keep away.

Contrary creatures that they are, he is probably enjoying watching you get frustrated about him not coming in. If he is in a safe fenced yard, and there is no immediate reason for him to come in, I would just close the door and go back inside until he's had enough. If he does need to come in, then I would take him out with a leash so that there is no argument when it's "in time". In either case, a treat or other reward upon entering the house would likely increase his motivation to come back in.

Something to consider is what happens when he comes in. Is it time for you to leave? Crate time? You stop paying him attention (trying to get him to come in is attention)? He may have a good reason for not wanting to come in.

For the poop eating, the only 100% effective remedy is immediate pick up.

For the third, yeah, I would just keep an eye on him and see if he shows any other signs of a problem.

Too funny Barney started doing this a month ago He would look up from the yard and just give me a look. I would just shut the door and wait for him to come in. I know Barney whines or barks when one of the dogs will not play with him. Maybe he is whining because the rabbit is ignoring him and running away

if you are not familiar that could be 1. a hound bay/bawl many call it cross between a bark and howl but for each dog it is unique it is what basset do when in hot persute see the follow video
basset bay

if the dog looked like it was skipping. bunny hopping or holding a rear leg up then the likely cause is a luxating patella that is the knee cap slips out of place. it pops back in and the dog is almost as good as new. depeding on the severity of the problem surgery is sometime required but not always.

on poop eat for and explaintion why dog do this read the following link I general include the releavant part but give the recent past to want to "offend" any one with the cuss words in the article.
how wolves became dogs

I agree with everything Soundtrack has said but it does not actual help you improve the recall see

Have you tried pineapple? I don't know why, but it must make poop taste like.... well, poop! It worked for my Annie when she was a puppy. I used to train a golden who did it his whole life, and neither him nor Annie are underfed that's for sure!

Thank you all for your responses, the backyard is fenced in and he spends a lot of time in it so i'm thinking that maybe he's just used to me putting him back there for a while and is thinking that everytime he's supposed to stay out. I would just think that me standing there calling him and waiting by the door he would at least think it's OK to come in. We live in the midwest and while it has been a very mild winter so far it's been raining the last couple of days which is why I wanted him to come back inside.
As for the leg he doesn't seem to be favoring it at all, he's been chasing rabbits and squirrels in the backyard since he was a pup. This is the first time i've ever heard him whine or yelp while chasing one which is why I was concerned. After watching your video that is exactly what it sounded like and I don't know why I didn't think of it, maybe he's just growing up into his natural tracker self
Finally for the poop, i've never tried pineapple I might try it. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of poop it is lately he's wanted seconds.
Princess Buttercup if only you didn't live so far away i'm sure he would love to have another basset friend to run and chase bunnies and squirrels with!!!

Lightning is a connoisseur of poop, so I have tried everything. It's not about being hungry, or missing certain vitamins. Some animals do it, and some don't. I tried DisTaste, but it only made a difference if I doubled or even tripled the recommended dosage, at which point it became too expensive to be worth it. Picking up behind him is really the only answer. Between the poop buffet and the rabbits, no wonder Napoleon (have I mentioned how much I LOVE that name?) doesn't want to come in. It sounds like basset heaven.

and he may but because it is ok to come does not mean he wants to. Second another mistake people make is thinking their dog has a willingness to please them, that is the dog does what it is asked to do because it want to please the human. So breed perhabs basset not so much they are in it for themselves. If it is boring inside but dry and wet outside but exciting the dog has a choice to make an napolean has obviously made his. Want him to com in on a regualar basis when ask you need to make it worth his while. If he go a cookie every time he came in it could easily change his attitude.

We have squirrels, birds, and neighbors - Winston is also very reluctant to come in. Treats are starting to change his mind. When my boy parks himself in the yard, very little motivates him to move.
