Default ~Calgon Take Me Away~

...or the thought of calling the gyspies has crossed my mind. I've had Carley yesterday and today while my daughter works. She does'nt want her left alone for 8hrs...needless to say I feel like potty training has gone out the door. Having two has been crazy...but do they ever play. Someone said to me once on this site that the crate is their haven and my heaven...ain't that the truth! Yesterday while they slept I did alot of reading and looking at pictures on this site...to the point I think I am a little paranoid...especially about dog food. Right or wrong I have been giving Maezie Beneful puppy food and she seems to be doing well off of it. I have'nt given her any people food yet as I am afraid it will upset her tummy. Still getting up in the middle of the nite a few times...last nite I was so dag gone tired I put her to bed at 7 and went myself. Also I've read alot about your doggies personalities...I've yet to figure out Maezie's. When Carley comes I get kissed to death..but do u think Maezie will kiss me...no..not a chance...she does'nt seem to get excited like Carely does. She's a dead beat when I get her out of the crate...just acts all limp and stuff...or for better words...lazy. I'm looking so forward to posting all the funny things she does...right now it's all puppy play. She is doing very well with the crate...on the tie out chain to potty...and walking on a leash. I am kissing over her all the time..and she's so soft. Carley is a bit of a scarey puppy. I absoutley love reading all the threads and looking at pictures and am wondering what she'll look like as she gets older...maybe just a bigger version as she is now. This is my first time with a Basset...only had boxers and 1 schnauzer...basically they were good dogs. Sometimes I feel like having her is just like having an infant..or toddler...nap..play..eat...nap..play eat..oh and out to potty several times through out the day. I've been worried about seperation anxiety...cleaning of her ears..dog food...etc. I think it's just a trial and error kind of thing. What works best for one...does'nt necessarily work best for another...but I'm always looking for advice and will try anything. Have to say...it's been quite an adventure...and yes..I say..what did I get myself into...and did I do the right thing...but those droopy eyes...long ears..and soft body..make it all right...oh and I love it when she snuggles up on the sofa with me...when she decides to wind down. There are many times when I need to vent...but hate to keep posting about it. As I said earlier...just looking forward to what her personality is going to be. Oh...can I give her chew bones...like rawhide or whatever. Now she just gets Milk Bone puppy treats. If I had some Calgon...I'd go for a long soak..and hope it would take me away...LOL....To end this...some days are better than others...but I will perservere. Thanks for reading...again..seems like I just rambled on.

You really have your hand full with two. Maybe you could leave your daughter's at her house in a kennel to get a break. When I had two puppies I was 10 years younger now I would not be able to have the energy to train two. When Barney has pent up energy I snap his leash on and go for a walk. Two puppies together gets tough they feed off of eachother's energy and are so excited to play. I know when Barney sees a few puppies he is friends with they will literally play for hours on end running outside and wrestling in the house. I think it would be easier if you only had one dog the majority of the time to train you are a good mom but having two all day is going to be exhausting. I agree all the info out there is overwhelming and you are correct what works for some does not work for others . I would say top of the list is making sure you get breaks and keep plugging away at housebreaking. Trust me at your dogs age struggling with this is the norm. Someone also mentioned that at 6 months they can have a set back and this is true. I did not get to Barney in time and he peed in the house last week first time in months. So with bassets it is an ongoing process I was so proud I thought I performed a miracle training under 6 months only to find out this was not true. Out of curiousity how late are your dogs gettig water at. When I was training I would remove the water bowl at 7pm and I would set it out every couple of hours during the day. My puppies have never had a constant source of water until they were 90% housebroken. FWIW I had a hard time leaving Barney the first few months my mom and friends kept lecturing me about seperation anxiety. I can now walk out the door without any issues Barney I assume goes to sleep. He has no issues with seperation. I would start when you are ready slowly a few trips to the store going out ot lunch.

Thanks for replying....I only have Carley 4 days out of 2 weeks. I feel like I need to help my daughter as she does so much for me...and hopefully it won't be much longer. Yes..I only allow them to have water a few times during the day...and I take it away around 5pm

As for food, feed her what you can afford and what she does well on. Just make sure you're giving her puppy food at this point. I would be careful with rawhides at her age as they could upset her tummy. I learned this the hard way when Rosco was a puppy. He can tolerate them now as an adult but as a puppy it was a guaranteed tummy ache and sick puppy. As an alternative I gave him a kong filled with puppy treats.

Puppies can be trying. Having two only increases the frustration. Use the crates to give yourself a break. You may even try crating the two together so they have a companion. The best thing I could recommend as a partial sanity preserver is to stick to a schedule as best you can. That being said puppies like toddlers and babies can still have their crazy days.

Also as a note, your puppies are probably still too little to expect them to sleep through the night without having go out to potty. A general rule of thumb is a puppy can hold it for as many hours as it is months old (ex 3 months old = approx 3 - 4 hours). Now each dog maybe different in how long they can hold it but trying to make them hold it all night when they are too little can just add to the frustration and may delay potty training. I used to set my alarm to get up every 3 hours when I first got Rosco. As he got a little older I would stretch the time a little further until he was able to go most of he night at around 6 months old. (They really are just like babies)

Good luck and hang in there! We can't wait to hear your stories!

I am on my way to work so this has to be short.....I also tend to ramble on I was so scared to get a puppy for the exact reasons of what your going thru. I went ahead and bit the bullet so to say because me and my husband made a pro and con list of a puppy or older dog and with all the work a puppy would be the puppy still won out because we have 2 small children. Anyway this is just a word of encouragement and to say that it is TOTALLY worth it all in the end. Kiara will be 1 yr old next month and we went thru a trying time with her over potty training but one day at about 6ish months its just clicked for her and we haven't had an accident since...OK once when she got really mad at my husband and peed on his side of the bed LOL. I totally agree with the poster who said an hr for every month they are they seem to be right on that with maybe an hour added extra but if the puppy is say 4 months old then every 4-5 hrs she needs to go out. I am not a schedule type person I wasn't even one when I brought home human babies but I quickly learned with a puppy that a eating, sleeping and potty schedule was necessary. Now almost a year later Kiara still gets up within the same hour every morning to ask to go potty, eat and she will lay back down.

I can't tell you the rewards that you will find with this lil girl, Just know they are there and they are SO worth it. Vent when you need to. Ask questions but most of all love her like crazy and take lots of pictures

P.S. Its never also to early to start a lil obedience training for sit,lay and come. I started with Kiara right at 7 weeks. We would do 5-10 mins a day 2 or 3 times a day and she just thought it was play time but however at her age now I can see it was the right thing to do and its totally paying off. Its great bonding time also

Good luck with your puppy and with your sanity when you have both lil ones.

I had to dig rawhide out of Lightning's throat twice when he was an older puppy/young dog because he was choking (he thinks everything is edible), and if he swallowed it he would definitely get sick. IF you give your puppy rawhide, make sure it is made in America because I read that those made in other countries have chemicals or something that makes the dog sick. But after those couple of choking incidents, I never gave Lightning any kind of chew toy that wasn't completely indestructible (big nylabones, basically).

"Don't borrow trouble", as all my relatives say. Enjoy your puppy and try not to worry about what might happen, e.g., ear problems, food issues, etc. Bassets are hardy dogs. And sleep when you can! It shouldn't be long before she is sleeping through the night.

After being reminded by another post, I gave Rosco bully sticks (dried beef tendons) to chew on. They are more digestible than rawhides but they tend to be more expensive. If you do decide to try them be aware that some pet stores like Petco and Petsmart carry ones that say they are bully stick but aren't the whole tendon but ground up tendon compress back into a bully stick shape (don't ask me why they do it). These never lasted very long for my dogs.

Oh..the replies are great! Thank you all! I think I'll just stick to the Kong filled with pb for now...She's doing really well off the Beneful. It's just been trying since yesterday having both...but Carley is so sweet...and bigger than Maezie! Today I have them on a strict schedule...for my own sanity. At 3 this afternoon my son in law with come pick Carely up and I won't have for about 5-6 days..depending when my daughter works. Tomorrow they are going to the vet. I'm anxious for that. We have the best Vet in this area. I've taken pets to him for years. I'm glad I can come on here and vent...reading re-assuring replies really helps. My camera isn't working so I have to rely on others to take pics...hopefully I'll get some more soon.
