I remember a few posts awhile ago about chew toys – but my memory being what it is – I don’t remember what kind of bones or rawhide you give your fur babies if at all.
Being the over protective momma I am and how strong Mable’s bit is – I’ve been afraid to give her bones or rawhide for chewing. I use to give them to Lucy and Flash – without any worry because they didn’t try and devour everything in the first three minutes – they would take their time with them. Anyway, I had to go to the food store today for Mable and I finally broke down and got her a rawhide bone. I looked for the biggest one I could find so I wouldn’t have to worry about her chewing it down to nothing within minutes. She’s right next to me going to town and I think I’m driving her nuts because I keep taking it away from her to check for pieces she’s broken off that she could choke on so I can remove them. Could you share with me what you’ve found you like to give them and equally important what you didn’t and why. Thanks, Jen~ Oh, I had to share a few photos of Mabel enjoying her first Rawhide – hope you enjoy them.

OMG - that bone is so huge. Those pictures are awesome! I have no input as we obviously need to figure this out for Mae. She'd prefer to chew on stuffed animals and puppets all day long and those are not an option, soooo....curious to hear what you find out!

Henry has frozen vegetables to comp on when it is warmer, he loves sinking his teeth into a frozen apple!
He has similar raw hide...but not in the same epic proportion ... and we have never had a problem. He has the kong footballs as they have enough flexibility to give under his teeth without breaking |

Chloe loves marrow bones....we buy them from the meat department and our black lab loves to get the marrow out and then Chloe gets the bone. They are great!!!!!! I get the biggest kick out of her when she is chomping on it because she continuously sticks her tongue out of the middle like a snake. I crack up everytime. She stays busy for quite awhile and since she is still small she doesn't break any pieces off.
ALso....Petsmart sells this green chewy ball that fits small treats in it and it also keeps her busy forever trying to chew them out. (this is the one and only chew toy our black lab hasn't been able to destroy). |

Ours enjoy a hearty stick from the yard every now and again. We do give them rawhides but we take them away when they get small enough to be swallowed. Rawhides seems to be the only thing they don't devour in seconds.

Penny is jealous of how big of a bone Mabel gets and she's looking at me like "Um. Excuse me. You never told me they make them that big."
Penny loves rawhide, bones, pig ears, and hooves. I rarely give her things that aren't rawhide, though, because the latter all make big messes on my carpet and since I'm leasing I can't afford that on the floor. Penny eats the rawhide all the way til its gone. I watch her when she gets down to where its real small, but she always seems to watch herself with it too so she can carefully eat all of it. I think she doesn't want me to have to take it away from her so she can finish it. ^^; I recently bought her antlers and she loves the marrow in the middle. They're real nice too, because they last so long. Also, depending on where you live, you can get them from hunters and stuff. Just make sure you buy them big enough!

Bowser's been trying a new brand from "N-Bone" that last a few hours, before i take it away for another night. He ate about half of a medium bone in those few hours. It has no rawhide, no beef, no chicken or wheat! I just don't want to pay for them, i think they're expensive ($8.99 for the one bone...though i got it on sale for $2.00 cheaper). He actually used to do really, really well with rawhide. Daisy gulps it down and then barffs it up later in chunks, but Bowser would just knaw knaw knaw and get it all slimy.
Hey...so...Do your bassets use their paws?? One thing i noticed with Bowser...we always laugh at him, becuase he won't hold whatever it is he's chewing, with his paws! He just lays it on the floor and uses only his mouth. THe few couple times he HAS used his paws...he get's goop all the way up to his elbows, all over his face, and all over his ears *rolls eyes* like having a messy two-year old! LOL

I found my dogs LOVE nylabone dinasours. I don't know why they like them but they do! Since it gets so hot here in the summer they also like them right out of the freezer. i can't give my guys rawhide because Oliver my 5 year old likes to steal everybody's and burry them in the backyard, then he gets all grumpy and guards the area. My dogs were never fans of Kongs unless I put peanut butter in them. When I first got Annie when she was a baby I bought her a nylabone fish... I really liked it and so did she, but a foster dog tore it to bits and swallowed the pieces, so we just stick with the dinasours.

Annie isn't much of a chewer. At our park the other dogs all chew on pinecones. Annie doesn't quite get that they chew them, not eat them. So I usually have to take them from her before she swallows them whole.
