So normally in my neck of the woods this time of year its below freezing and there are feet upon feet of snow on the ground well due to this jet stream or global warming or the end of the world coming (sarcasam implied here)whatever it might be it is a beautiful day out and I had on flip flops *does a happy dance* so the dog park was a MUST since its my day off work I figured why not...haven't been for a few weeks and its bath night lets go.
When we got there Kiara made the 3rd dog but after being there for about 15 mins more and more dogs showed up and she was having a blast by the way. Now the reason I am such a proud mama after all the rambling after about 10 dogs were there and she was having a grand ole time she was running off into the corner to eat something and I yelled for her to come and this dog park is HUGE its like a football field big and she came right to me the first time!!!!! Everytime the whole visit that I "obedienced" her she listened and the kicker of it all was while all these dogs were running around playing and we humans decided it was time to go I gave one last call "Kiara Come" she did and I said "Kiara Sit" and she sat down promptly and let me put the leash on her harness!!!! I have NEVER been so proud. This is a big accomplishment for us because normally at the dog park when its time to go she will run and run and run until one of us catch her. I have been working with her on her recall (I think that is what its called) and we have been doing more in-home intense obedience much more then what I did "puppy-wise". It seems to be paying off and I am so happy!!! I just had to share. I think she is turning into a fine, fine dog. BTW all the people and the dogs at the dog park love her and the people always comment on how beautiful she is because of her markings and coloring but I swear if I hear one more time about how someone can't believe my dog can run then I might scream. If you made it this far thanks for hanging in on my rambling long post

Ive been trying to go level by level with Kiara in obedience since the day we brought her home at 7weeks old. She will be a year old next month and I feel like we are making much slower progress then what I have seen other people make but I always have to keep in mind that the other people are training very different dog breeds and I don't think it helps me that I don't know what she is mixed with so I can't get any help from that side of the fence. I won't let the basset hound stubbornness keep her from being a well behaved pet

LOL...we go to "our" park daily and almost daily we hear from someone saying they can't believe how much Annie runs, so I know how silly it sounds to hear it.
Isn't it the best feeling ever when your dog just gets it all of a sudden...they sit, or come, or whatever!?!?

Annie the lady tonight that said it to me said it so rudely that I couldn't help myself normally I am polite and just kinda laugh it off as in like what dog can't run?? But I looked at her and I went into this long drawn out spiel about how Basset were actually bred for hunting small game animals so they need to be able to run and she looked at me like OMG what can of worms did I open. I really detest rude people. Lets just say she didn't talk to me the rest of the time we were at the dog park.
Whatever Kiara is mixed with must be a hunting or sporting breed as well because I tell you what she doesn't run she RUNS! Its amazing to watch. I will have to get a video of it sometime to post. Thanks MollyMcFrecklesMom it does seem like such a big accomplishment and I have worked really hard to get to this point with her. SwimmingDuck just keep working at it and it will happen. Kiara still has a long way to go but at least with seeing that its working I am more inclined to keep with it and not get as frustrated. I don't ever expect a 100% perfect dog but I just want one that is obedient enough to listen in situations where she HAS to listen for safety or something like that. At the dog park things could go from happy to bad in a matter of a split second and I just feel better if I know I call out to her that she will come running. I am a worry wart though

Most people just laugh at our dogs when they run. Poor Rosco tries to keep up with the long legged dogs but just can't. So in return he howls while chasing them and everyone has a good time. I must have a pretty nice dog park because I have yet to have anyone say anything to me about running. Mostly they just say how cute they are and how much they love their ears.
Congrats on the obedience stuff. It sure makes a difference when you have them as a puppy. Rosco (whom I've had since he was a pup) will always come when I call and never goes too far away. Ms. Layla on the other hand will just wander off doing her own thing and will look at me when I call her but keeps going her own way. Breezy is a bit of a mixed bag. Sometimes she'll come right away and other days she has better things to smell. |

Way to go, Kiara! Are you sure you want Kiara and Boomer to meet someday? His manners can be somewhat lacking when it's play time.

Oh yes Boomer's Mom!!!!!! I am sure they won't rub off to badly and maybe Kiara would be a good influence on Boomer
I can't wait till the day she meets a basset hound again even just a mix like her would be nice. She hasn't seen a basset or mixed one since the day we took her home. All the times we have went to the dog park and the pet stores with her and and never ran into one
