SO! bluetickmama mentioned something about hunting. I know that mikey...i think? and a couple others on here have done rabbit hunting with bassets.
I was just curious as to how to teach them to track. I know, i know, the ulitmate way to get a hound to learn, is to run it with another hound who knows...but we don't know any. I've gotten Bowser to track meat in the grass...and we went camping with the family and he tracked a deer leg..did a good job actually. But when we actually took him in the woods with us, he wouldn't stick to the blood trail...just kept running around and finding deer poop to eat Worst hunting dog ever! LOLI don't know how to keep him from getting distracted. As some of you may know, I'm the crazy snake lady...i have 14 snakes, bought and rescues, and actually bowser really likes them. He doesn't care for the smaller ones, but he gets excited and "asks to play" with the bigger ones. He's very good though, and listens when i tell him to stay away and keep his distance...so no worries there. BUT, what i was curious about doing was we thought we might start "herping"...basically, going on hikes where you intentionally "hunt.....just look for" snakes. Kind of a catch and release or just "view" of what you find. We think bowser would be able to track them for us...but i would worry that he would want to play with them, or he would find a trail and just get distracted and try to eat poop again instead *lol* I am afraid to take him to teach him because i'd be afraid he'd find himself a rattlesnake and instead of the kingsnake or garter we'd be looking for. Anyway, just kind of rambling and wondering if there's anything i can do to help teach him to be a proper tracker!! Any advice?

macey Learned simply by observing other dog. beagle culb have starte pens which is much smaller area that holds a rabbit or two so the dog is more likely to stubble upon one and get the idea from there for other idea see my post on the ahba trial in pa there is a link to start basset their.
trackins is different the are put on a track so my understand that basical that to start they lay a track by walk with smaler than normal step ie concentrated scen and laying down a food moresel every so often at frist the track will be a straigh line then turns and such added. there si a whole series of tracking article on this site tracking On of the old moderator did a lot of tracking you could attempt to PM here she shows up on most of the stick threads Betsy Iola |

vewntura So CAL OR MORE NORTHERN, ?
The contact I gave wwormy for agility also does Field trials not sure about tracking Akc field trial are more like tracking bunnies than hunting in that the dogs do not have to find the rabbit instead they are put onj the track of the rabbit flushed by humans doesn/t make a lot of sense to be but that how they do it. the BHCA hunt test is closer to AHBA trial than and AKC field trial. if interested send a pm and I get you contact info. I now they hold Field trials in So. Cal in the san diego area spectators are welcome 2012 Spring Field Trial Schedule there are no AHBA event out your way. |

The game we play with Lilly started out w/ one of us keeping Lilly busy while the other hides. Then the "hider' would call her name and the other one w/ her would tell her to "go find it!". Then we picked up a book called "Fun Nosework For Dogs" and started out doing some of those games. Eventually we continued the "come find me" game outside. From the front of the side yard to the opposite corner of the backyard behind a tree, or bushes or even the other side of the house. I basically just adapted a game from there and added in a treat to really get her nose working. Other times I hide a treat dropping some crumbs here and there till she finds it, usually in a bush, while I tell her to 'go find it!". Its fairly simple but it keeps her excited and we praise the "s" outta her.
