Default An Introduction

I do apologize if this is in the wrong section!

I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Jess and although I don't have a basset, I do have a bluetick coonhound and there is a huge lack of bluetick forums that aren't for the die hard hunter! I know that bassets can be JUST as stubborn as blueticks so I hope y'all don't mind that my hound has a little bit too much leg!

Me: I am the wife of a United States Sailor and couldn't be more proud of that fact. I love my husband and he makes me happy. What could be better! We have many "kids" and all but two are furry. The other two are actually more like roommates... frogs don't show much affection! Hahaha. Two of the furkids are dogs and the other four are rats. We have two big girls and two new baby girls.

Dude (The Gentleman): Dude is my 8 year old tricolor smooth collie. I got him from a BYB when I was in 8th grade. I didn't know any better. He lived with me and my parents for 7 years before I moved last year and now he lives with me and my husband. He absolutely LOVES kids and often sees them before I do. He always runs up to them (especially little girls since he decided he likes them better of rough boys like my little brothers!) and will just stand there as long as they pet him.

Buck (The Problem Child): Buck is my bluetick coonhound. He was born on March 31st and just turned 9 months old last week. Because my husband and I share a car, I haven't been able to enter him in any shows yet. His first one will be in March. I have shown before but never owner handled so any advice would be welcome! Buck is our hoover dog. We have to crunch up the bigger bones in his meals because he will attempt to swallow his meals whole. I have never had a dog as food obsessed as Buck. He will do anything for the tiniest morsel! He has your typical nose deafness... unless you have food. He is BRILLIANT. The problem solving abilities of this dog are astounding. We have a "dog room" where it is completely dog proofed for them to stay in when we go out and dogs aren't welcome (they usually come with us) and to keep him contained we have to use chairs, a baby pen broken into several sections, a crate (without him in it since there is no hope of keeping him in one of those) and the closed door. Sometimes I feel like we should have named him Houdini.

Some of you have probably already picked up on the fact that I am a member of the dreaded DFC but I am not here to cause trouble. The simple fact is that I have a hound and so does everyone here. I don't run back and forth between forums to report to everyone. I am simply a member of two different forums. What goes on over there is not the basset forum's business and what goes on here is none of DFC's business. Hate me if you will simply because I am from DFC but that's fine. I can't please everyone. I hope that, those of you who were here for all of the drama (I wasn't) can get past that fact and that we can become friends.

Yes, I feed raw. No, I am not going to shove my way of feeding down your throat. I won't, however, just sit back and let untrue information about raw fly around. There are many myths and untruths about raw that are passed around that are based in fear and lack of knowledge. I will not point them all out here but I am ALWAYS open to someone asking me questions about the way I feed. There are always people wanting to learn more about raw so just feel free to ask!

Ultimately, I am here for the same reason most of you are. I love my hound! He is my pride and joy and I could not imagine life without him.

Debate is fine, as long as it's polite and respectful. As I've mentioned before, one has to learn to give the advice, then let it go. However, I feel that discussions are useful because even though you probably won't change the other person's mind, there are plenty of other people reading, many of whom never post, so it's good to have the information pro and con available. But this also means you need to take care how you present that information - if you appear to be rude, ignorant or fanatical people will most likely discount what you have to say, regardless of it's veracity.

Hiya Blue Tick & welcome!

a couple things since u mentioned it, that I want to clarify. first of all, we have never said anything bad about DFC here. nobody here has a problem with DFC. if it is a good resource, let us know what to look at: just post the links & we r happy to take a look.

also, we were told by Raw Diet supporters here to look at that forum for more info on Raw Diets. So a number of us looked, thinking we would find info on raw diets, but unfortunately also found some drama, a thread that was dedicated to us and our forum. It is titled "Ignorance makes me want to scream," referring to our forum.

so i hope you and folks can understand why a number of us were miffed about this happening. please understand we are not "trolling the internet" looking for things that people said about us. in this case, we were directed there. i felt Herzo's reply at the end of that thread, who has been a member of your forum for some time, sums up the sentiments a lot of us had. so i hope you understand (you may not care), but these points should be clarified.

we r trying to get this forum back to the happy, supportive place it often is. most of us want a peaceful and kind forum and have worked hard towards attaining that.

we r open to all sorts of diverging opinions about all topics, not just food, but also housebreaking, dog training, etc. and we try to treat those whose opinions differ from ours with respect and understanding.

i can give you a good example: Worm goes to daycare & dog parks all the time. A number of basset owners here would never let their dogs do one, the other, or both. and they will tell me the problems they see with it: ie. it might not be safe, there could be dogfights. They may be right, but when i weigh everything, the benefits outweight the risks to me, so i bring him anyway. i don't think that means that those here who disagree are not supporting me or are uneducated about dogparks; they just have a different opinion.

when posting about raw diets, more likely than not, people may express their concerns with the diet. just as they express concerns about all the other non-food topics that come up. so i hope that will not offend you, but that you will take it as other people's perspectives on that issue. but please feel free to post all the data that you think are important related to the issue. we are happy to approach all of that with an open mind.

again, welcome and thank you for the descriptions and pics of your dogs.
we are part of a Basset Group where we live and we have 2 adopted "Coonhounds" that join us, because they don't have a meetup group of their own here.

Soundtrack:

The rats are wonderful. People always say, "Ugh! Rats???". To me, they are a lot like having a pocket sized dog...

I am really just showing him for fun. I don't plan on breeding him unless he turns out to be a great example of a bluetick and can benefit the breed but it's does make it more fun when you know you have a chance of winning! Hahaha. We are still working on patience while stacked. He stacks just fine but he doesn't want to stand there for very long. Hahaha

Houndini. Hahaha. I like that. The trouble we have gone through with this dog to keep him in that one room are absolutely ridiculous but I can teach him something new in 5 minutes and it sticks with him.

I am all for debate. I usually do tend to stay out of it because I can get pretty passionate. The older I get the more I learn that debate should have been one of my high school activities. Hahaha. Although, I can't just debate about anything. I have no interest in politics and most topics out there. Animals, yes. I just don't like to get in the middle of things anymore. I am content to sit and let others argue amongst themselves. I have enough drama in my life that I don't feel the need to jump into the middle of a forum debate!

Annie714

Thank you! I think we will keep that between you and me because both dogs are already too full of themselves! Hahaha

loopylou

I have had people tell me that he is a beagle, a basset, a plott, redbone, walker... Hahaha. People STILL tell me that he is a big beagle. I had a LOT of people think he was a basset when he was a pup. He would trip over his ears and everyone would laugh about how cute the basset puppy was. Hahaha. From everything I have gathered though, basset and bluetick personalities are very similar!

Wworm

And I totally understand that. I like both Herzo and Barney's Mom. I have talked to both of them quite a bit. I just didn't want anyone finding out later that I have been a long time member of DFC and assume that I am here to "spy" on them. I felt like getting it out in the open would be better so no one could accuse me of hiding anything from them. DFC has been the victim of other forums' criticism before. Most people over there don't really care about what happened on this forum. We are, as the same as you lot here are, very protective of our own. I read and in fact commented on that thread (not negatively) so I do know which one you are talking about. I don't know what Jaleely said and I don't want to know. Natalie deleted it for a reason. I have no interest in what happened between the two forums. I have a hound. You have hounds. THAT is what I am interested.

I hope you can understand where I am coming from when I say that I just felt it would be better to have it out in the open. I am part of DFC which is a food specific forum so I will likely keep most, if not all, of my food debating over there. I missed the drama here and from what I can see, folks here are VERY against the raw diet. I could be totally wrong. It was my first impression and those are very important. I will gladly answer any questions about it but I'm not going to go around telling everyone that they should feed raw. Not everyone believes it to be best. To each his own.

And I have been in the middle of the dog park discussion as well. Hahaha. I love them. There is NO way that we could get Buck the exercise he would need without taking him. He can outrun both my husband and myself with no problem!

And thanks for the idea! Maybe I could find a basset group in Washington... I would love to be able to spend more time with hounds and their people. Blueticks on the west coast just don't have enough of their own over here! Hahaha

Esther... yes, DFC is dog food chat.

Bubbad

Thank you I will do that.
