Default Speaking of Food

So, aside from what to feed, has anyone had a basset with odd eating patterns? MaeMae was underweight when she came to us. Well, she was underweight when she was initially rescued, put on some weight while being fostered, but still needs probably about 10 lbs. Anyways, while adjusting to our home she seemed to drop a few pounds and not eat as well. That makes sense to me. But then it seems ever since she's gotten comfortable she's had this pattern of eating all of her food for a few days and then she'll go on food strike for a few days where she wastes about 1/3rd of what's in her bowl each meal (she eats twice a day). When she does decide to eat it all, she can scarf it down like nobody's business. Of course then I get all paranoid about bloat when she does that. But it just seems weird to have this eating/not eating pattern. Overall though, I do think she's filling out. She has a vet appt. later this month so we'll have her weighed then.

Oh...and just in case you're wondering. She's on Canidae's all life stages kibble mixed with Science Diet chicken or chicken/beef combo. And there's no consistency as to when she does her food strikes - meaning I've seen her eat both the chicken and the chicken/beef combo and I've seen her not eat both of those. Anyways, thoughts?

I have a neighbor down the street who has a basset. I was talking about how when Barney was younger he had trouble putting on weight he said his basset especially the first year did. He described the same eating habits as you some days his dog Pino would not touch his food other he would chow down. He is older now and still has the same eating habits. His basset is in great shape lean but not underweight so he ended turning out fine even with these eating habits.

PB eats like that... I think on the hunger strike days she's waiting for a better offer!

Hector has recently maybe in the last month started to eat this way too, he didn't want any of hi breakfast this morning and this evening he has left just over a third of it. I spoke to his vet about it and he said some dogs are just like it he called them trickle eaters. I was just concerned because he used to be a greedy guts.

Scout does the same thing. The longest he has gone without eating his kibble is about 2 days. Dogs won't usually starve themselves. Bassets are just pretty smart at training their humans to feel sorry for them and give them treats/table food.

Monty has just discovered Maltesers, he sucks the choclate off them and then crunches the honeycomb centre. They come second only to bacon rind!
