Default I finally got her to sit!

OMG - I have been working with MaeMae on "sit" for like forever. I don't know why, but I've had an awful time luring her into a sit. Rather than sit when I use a food lure, she starts backing up. So I focused on capturing sit with the clicker for awhile and now I've been able to lure her into a sit several times. With popcorn - am I terrible for giving her popcorn? She LOVES it! Oh...and pepperoni. But a regular dog treat? Forget it - she just looks at me and walks away!

We start our Family Dog class Saturday (actually she doesn't come until a week from this Saturday - first session is just me) so I was hoping to have a few things familiar at least since she'll be in a setting with other dogs/people. I think we'll make sure we review sit for the next few weeks. I'd also really like her to get "eave it" down - especially given all of her stuffed animal thieving. But something tells me even if she knew "leave it" she'd still sneak the stuffies when she thinks she's being covert. I love her for all of her thieving ways though!

Hey Charles! Well, I've been getting nonstop treats and that's helped with the skittishness some. I wag my tail more and more each day. But I still can be skittish at times. My mom says my tail is a great indicator of how I'm feeling, so if my tail says I'm unsure mom sticks to me like glue. The scariest being around is actually my four year old friend. He can be kind of unpredictable at times. But he does give me some pretty cool treats and will do belly rubs - so he's alright. But my mom watches out for me and separates us if he's being too scary for me!

Let me know how things go with your trainer! I hear you on the listening better part. Apparently my mom wants the same thing. Why can't I just lie wherever I please, steal stuffed toys, and look cute all day long?

luring is only one way to get a behavior for behaviors that the dog does natural that you really do not have to teach like sit stay down etc I capture the behavior that is using the clicker reward the behavior when it occurs. You get more of the behavior it will become predictable when you will get it . Then you can start to add the cue. their is never one way to train a dog. I fine it a lot eaiser than luring behavior especial a down which often does not work unless useing theunder the leg tecnique wich is far from natural and becomes a cue that need to be faded in the end a lot more work t think.

see the Sit test it would not be unusuall for even a well trained dog at home to to respond in an unfamiar place dog learn much differently than humans when humans learn something new the rush around seeing where else it might apply dog sort of the opposite the look to what was unique about the circumstances teach a dog to sit in the kitchen it knows to sit in the ktichen, ask the same dog for a sit in the living room it litteral has no idea what you are talking about because for the dog the location is part of the cue so with dogs you need to train in lots of places and situations for the behaviro to be generalized Not say you should try teaching the dog before class but explaining why things breakdown and the oh so cry of dog training studen but he is so good at home.

Thanks Mikey for the info. I have been capturing sit in addition to attempting to lure sit. So pretty much whenever I see her in a sit I try to click and treat. So hopefully she'll start to offer sit more when she's not sure what I want. It's funny when I try to do a training session with her. Sometimes she just looks at me like "What is this lady's problem? Just give me the treat already!" She's known to just get fed up and walk away! LOL - I'm sure we'll arrive - hopefully with my sanity intact.

charlie is scared to come inside as we've said before.
the trainer lady had him on a leash, door propped open, and practiced going in and out with rewards on the in. they will continue to practice. Me? I prance along next to him and get treats along with him just cause i'm there and all cute and stuff.

for most people sit is the default behavior, having owned a couple of barker they usually bark less in a down so I train a down as the default behavior when you are unsure of what to do a down will earn a treat .

the one thing about using a lure to train a sit is that it is pretty easy to morph the lure into the "proper" obedience hand signal for a sit.

most dog cannot back up with their head held up. You may want and try instead of luring the entire behavior start with the food in front of the nose when you bring it up and over the head reward the dog for having the snout up give the food when that position. Also once you have the head up move to the rear very slowly if you move to fast or to much the only way for the dog to reach the food is to back up you want the dlog to put the rear end down to get just a fraction more space to get back in front of the food.
