Question The case of the missing ball....

Okay, so there's no easy way to say this, just don't laugh as it's a sensitive subject...... he only has one ball. Not the bouncey kind but the prize winning kind! I always hoped it would somehow magically appear one day but now, at the age of 9 months, I've lost all hope

The vet recommends going in search of it (it's not Spock for crying out loud!!!!) when he's getting the other one dealt with but he also says it can be anywhere from the groin to up near the kidneys. Has anyone else dealt with the same thing? Did the vet find it easily enough?

haha, oh no, that is terrible.

ok.... boy stuff now.
my wiener dog predecessor also looked like he had one, but it was actually 2-in-1 if that makes sense? so we never had to go looking.

i HAD 2, now i have 0

my pal Louie, not a basset, a tiny white fluffy dog, was apparently a bit aggressive sexually. but the last straw was when he bit my pal Fudge, a big chocolate retriever's balls & didn't let go...! yikes! Fudge is ok but he always remembers it around that yipee dog.

well, yup, they went searching and found it. and he's been better since, behaviorally too.

dunno if this helps at all, but that's what came to mind.

I have known of one dog whose ball dropped after 1 year of age,I know because I found it.The breeder told me he didn't have it I went to look at him and "WEL-LA there it was. This is not the norm though and everything your Vet said is correct, to let it in there at some point it could become cancerous. Exploritory surgery is not cheap either but you may not have much of a choice. Good Luck

That does happen sometimes. It's believed to be an inherited fault.

The vet is correct, it's best to have it removed. Because they are not intended to be at such a high temperature (that's why they are "outside"), retained testicles have a much higher propensity towards cancer. Plus one would not want to breed a dog with this fault anyway. It will likely cost more than a regular neuter surgery as it is more involved.

If you don't wish to neuter I believe it can be "brought down" surgically, but I think that is more expensive and involved than straight removal.

Gosh, one came out after a year?

The vet said that if one's been "in there" it can make the "out there" one more prone to cancer sometimes. I think it'd be best to get rid of both I do worry how big the wound will be if they have to go looking for it as he's a very long boy!

Poor Fudge btw!

Everyone is right...it really does need to be removed...for it does pose a significantly higher risk for cancer. I believe that they will go in the area the testicle should and explore thru that to find it. Most times they are just inside but can be further up......

Please keep us posted...I did have a cat with one....and when they where nuetering him, it was just inside the skin area.....not to bad to remove.
