Just been feeling discouraged. Maybe I'm expecting to much for a 10 wk old puppy...but potty training has been really trying. She does go everytime I take her out which is every 20-30 mins. I praise her and give her a treat each time. We are no longer in the house and she goes again. I know I have her out long enough...she does'nt like the cold for sure...always high tails it to the door. Maybe I am answering my own question...it's still too early. I have read that people are getting theirs trained anywhere as early as 4 month olds. I'm thinking how can this be...they are still babies. I guess I forget how it is to train..it's been 8yrs. Geeeshhh...I hardly feel like I can type. I love her to death..she is just the cutest...but oh my....sigh... Also getting up in the middle of the nite still.. approx 1-3 times. I sure am lacking on sleep as I don't sleep that well as it is. Also maybe i just need to vent...sigh..again...

Barney went through a phase where he would go and then come in and go. I was also told I was not stayig out long enough it did not last very long. I got him when he was almost 12 weeks. I think it is just a matter of time.I found dealing with the housebreaking aty 11 weeks was easier than starting from 8 weeks those 4 weeks until twelve weeks can be exhausting. I remember how frustrated I was by the time 12 weeks came around I think it is just a matter of her being so young they don't have much control. Even though I had barney trained when I was home if I left him more than two hours unkenneled he would go. I bet over the next few weeks she will start to empty her bladder more compketely. I feel like they are so new to everything going on around them they are very distracted when they are outside and are not really concentrating on going. Puppy hood can be tiring I was really looking forward to barney turning 6 months.

It will totally get better. You are doing all the right things. We didnt' pick up Worm till 16 weeks. and it took 6 weeks to housetrain him fully. Those were some miserable 6 weeks. followed him around everywhere. did not have time to read on this forum or post on this forum... ha! and we remember very little about our time here. so you are doing better than us already... we didn't call Worm "squirt" for nothing!

Hang in there Mary, it WILL get better!
I am no expert on this subject, just a mommy of two. Jake was a Christmas present (8wks old) and he took awhile to train. I think it was a combo of things. Winter certainly doesn't help. Would you want to have to go out and do your business He's male, and I think they are harder to train (no matter the breed) than the girls. I also work full time so I couldn't do the every 30 minutes thing. With Jake, I did the crate training. He was good a night (not soiling the crate) I kept in in the bedroom so I could hear him and endured the frequent getting up to go. He would soil the crate during the day. It got better as he got older. Last person to leave in the AM put him out and made him stay out until he went (often a couple times... he tends to pee in several spots before he is "done"), home at lunch, then immediately upon coming home from work. I also incorporated paper training. the crate was big (probably too big) so if he peed on the paper in the crate and not the bedding, it was a "good" thing, then I started leaving the crate open with paper in the same room. (our downstairs is tiled and I gated him downstairs). If he went on the paper while we were gone, I would praise him. However, going OUTSIDE is when he got treats. He also had Sophie (my other dog) there and she taught him to scratch to go out. I think having Sophie as an example was a big help. (Sophie was one of those dogs that would burst before she went inside). Abby I started with the crate. then she moved to my bed at night and would wake me when she wanted out. The frequency lessened as she got older. I didn't really do the crate during the day with her, but did use piddle pads (still do because of her kidney problems she can't last all day, but uses those when we are gone) When we are home, she scratches at the door to go out (Jake taught her that, which he learned from Sophie). I think that having a trained dog to mentor the pup is a big help. However, if you don't have a big brother or sister to help, they will learn. Sophie was an only child for a while and she started off with Crate training, then paper training (loose in a confined area). Again, praise for paper, but treats for outside business. When I first got sophie I lived in an apartment, so she had to be on a leash. I used a retractable one, and would "click" the handle and tell her to be a "good girl". I think the "clicking" helped (so maybe you may want to try a training clicker?) Just my thoughts and experiences on the matter. Meanwhile, if you need to vent, then vent away! We have all been (or are) there with training a pup. Jen |

Monty was 12 weeks when we got him and he hadn't been potty trained. I've always thought he was pretty good, he stopped having "accidents" at about 5 months old. I remember the sleepless nights and feeling like a zombie. Honestly, it will get better! Just perserve, one day she will suddenly realise what's expected of her and life will begin again! Vent away. I remember at the time asking myself "what have I done" and "what a nightmare" but I would not trade him for anything. We've all been through it. Trust me - You'll make it

Hang in there – you’re training one of the hardest breeds to train in the worst time of year to train them. It’ll get better – hard to believe when you’re going through this now – but it will – promise.

Barney was almost 7 weeks old when I got him...all in all, he was pretty easy to train...it was spring and I have a dog door. I would take him out every 20 minutes which since I was mostly home, not much of a problem. I did notice that he had to go about three different times when out there to get it done. After a month, things got alot easier. It's amazing but one day it just clicks for them....strange but true. Hang in there....it gets alot easier.

Lightning was probably close to a year before I thought he was potty trained. I keep him confined to half the house. Not too long ago I let him into the other part of the house, and he immediately peed on the carpet. So I don't know that I can say he's really potty trained. But I have a dog door, which makes it so much easier. Anyhoo, good luck and try to keep your chin up. She'll probably have a really good couple of weeks, and you'll feel like you've turned a corner, and then she'll regress. It seems to be two steps forward and one step back with bassets.

^^I have the same situation he is gated to a certain part of the house I only allow him into the other areas of the house that really helped with training. In the beginning he would walk around the corner where I could not see and if I was not paying attention odds are he would pee. I think it helped so much that he was always under a watchful eye. I still have my dogs gated in a certain area of the house with four dogs that is the only way to keep your house clean. I want people to be surprised I have four dogs.

Don't give up. My Sadie was 9 months old before she was reliable in the house. Spencer was a bit better, at 6 months.
