Default Dog Diet - info for all

Okay. I'm going to lay down the rules so we can all play (nicely).

Fill in the blanks, and don't deffer from the game! No caps, no calling out specific people. You may only address a specific person if you have a simple question. No snarky remarks, and no backhanded or sarcastic questions.
Let's try to post valid links to information on each diet, so this can be a healthy reference post. None of the "I feed __ because all else is inferior!" No arrogance. We are all going to have a safe place to learn.

Fill in the following:

My dog eats ___

I chose this because ___

I would like to learn more about ___ .

Here are some helpful links I have read about ___.

________
I will go first, and feel free to add valid information or "blanks"!
________

My dog eats Vegan.

I chose this because of his food allergies. I actually do not know that much about veggie diets, as I buy an easy to use veggie dog food blend.

I would like to learn more about veggie diet, and also home cooked diets.

Here is a link to some information about what i feed my dog.
Del Monte: Nature's Recipe

I would actually also like to know more about a lower carb option. Bowser does really, really well on this food, but i'm not too happy with the ingredients. I feel that he could get more from a home-cooked diet, i am just not really sure how to begin...also i'm worried it would be too expensive. He is allergic to chicken and beef, so that leaves some pretty pricey meats left!

__
Okay folks, let's give everyone a chance to feel like their voice is heard. We are a pretty open group. Let's prove it and put it all in once easy to access place. Lets' stick to facts, and questions. Opinions on another thread, if you please! Yay!

That's why Webster ended up on a fish-based diet (primarily whole frozen sardines). He was okay with some meats, like rabbit and venison, but both were way too expensive to feed and rabbit is to low in fat to feed long term.

Hector is currently eating barking heads little big foot chicken, though he is changing to the big foot next week which is the adult food.

He does really well on it, he is a nice weight and his coat is beautiful.

I could list all the foods he has tried and the reasons why he isn't on them but I think that's against the thread rules lol.

I am interested in raw feed but I don't think my partner has the stomach for it lol.

I have fed my dogs a raw diet for 3 months. I am a lazy raw feeder I buy the meat all prepared at the grocery store so it is the same if I was preparing my own food but I do not cook it. I am interested in if there are any benefits to veggies in a dog's diet.
I have chosen to stick with it because I have tried so many kibbles out there and and my dogs look so much more healthy and vibrant because of it. I have saved at least 6 teeth in daisy's mouth in 3 months she can lick me all over my face and I do not want to vomit from the smell.
Dog Food Forum this is a great site it has seperatre forums for raw fed, kibble fed, barf, and homecooked meals.
However be warned both sides can get pretty rough with eachother and you will see some strong opinions the debates that happen here are very mild in comparison. This is why the forums are all seperate. I would suggest checking it out I like how i can see what brands etc others feed and how their dogs does on it. Everyone is super friendly and there is alot of help. But the people on ech forum are pretty die hard about their diet and conversations between raw and kibble people can get pretty rowdy but I like that it adds some excitement.
Here is a good site on why you should choose raw and the benefits of using a more natural approach to raising your dogs.

Chicken and beef are actually really common for dogs to be allergic to it has been the main protein fed to dogs for so long. I agree try a fish based diet there are lots of kibble out there without beef/chicken sometimes it could be an issue if there is corn soy and I forget the third dthose are pretty common allergies in dogs. I know with Daisy I was told that fish is low on the allergy list for dogs. I know if I give my dogs chicken that they will be itchy and they never are usually

One more thing I would love to know what kinds of supplements and vitamins people give their dogs and why. I only use wild salmon oil but would be interested to know what people think about vitamins.

Not only chicken and beef (chicken would turn him bright red within 24 hours) he was also allergic to pork, lamb, canned fish and eggs. Surprisingly, he seemed to be able to eat ProPlan Turkey and Barley formula for short periods of time, although within 3-4 weeks he would start itching again. I'm not sure why I never tried him with real turkey.

Daisy always suffered skin issues no matter which protein I fed. She had scratched herself bald in areas this became much worse she would do it for hours everyday.I don't give my dogs any type of medication for allergies I will only use an antibiotic which daisy needed at least once a year because of gum infections also Barney for giardia. After Daisy scratched a 6x6" bloody hot spot which on an 8 pound doxie that is very big I decided to go raw. Maybe a month into it her scratching was reduced by 99%. I wonder why it is if she is given it raw she does great but for the 10 years she was on kibble her allergies got worse she was fed a grain free diet for most of her life.

Probably she was allergic to some other ingredient(s) in the kibbles. And when I say Web was allergic to this that or the other I mean the actual meat, raw or cooked. I never did find a kibble he could eat, and believe me I tried a lot of them.

You may find this site useful
DogAware.com: Diet & Health Info for Man's Best Friend

I like it because although she prefers to feed raw, she gives detailed info for raw, cooked and kibble (and supplementing kibble) and seems reasonably balanced about it. For some specific issues she recommends cooked over raw. She also provides links to articles and studies for further research. I think it's generally a good place to start.
