Now that most of Barney's permanent teeth have come in, I was looking over toothbrushes and paste, and yes, I know, I should have started this sooner but just neglected to do it. Before I buy anything, thought I'd ask and see what works and what doesn't. They have the brushes, finger things and wipes. Would appreciate any imput.

When I brush which I freely admit is much less than should be done I use the finger thingy it what works best for me, my suggestion is simply try all three or more and find what works best for you there a people that will perfer on over the other but there is no consistent pattern or guideline that will help in deternining that
If I'm not mistake Soundtrack use an electric toothbrush for hers because her dog tollerate the circular/rotating motion better than the up down back and forth of a traditional brush. or wipe. |

Basically use whatever works best for you and your dog. I admit I don't do their teeth often enough, but when I do the don't seem to mind the battery tooth brush, but I have had them object to a regular one. Tasty (canine) toothpaste is a must. My guys seem to like the chicken flavor.

I too am guilty of not doing it often enough. When I do, I use liver flavor (they seem to like it... Uck!), but I have to use my finger. Neither of them will put up with a brush or finger thingy, let alone an electric TB.
I do give them the denta-bones about once a month as a "treat" and that does seem to help with the tartar. Both have pretty good teeth, although Jake does have higher build up on his molars (he is 11 tho). Don't know if this helps, but it is what I have come across. |

Mine get dentastix every week or two, there are also bones around the house to chew and I sometimes get them chicken necks or backs as "dental treats".

Dentastix, aren't they the "small" version of Denta-bones? We also have big rawhid sticks around the house, but only Abby actually chews them. Jake carries them around, spends lots of energy "hiding" them, only for Abby to pick it up the minute he turns his back. Like hiding it in an open corner is hidden. Silly boy. But he works so hard !

Mine are terrible when I try to brush their teeth. So I forgo brushing (I know, bad doggy parenting). Instead, I use Tropiclean Fresh Breath Water Additive and a Tropiclean gel for their teeth that doesn't require brushing. My little girl has multiple broken teeth from past trauma before her rescue, so I can't get close to her teeth without hurting her or causing her great stress.

This stuff: Tropiclean Fresh Breath Water Additive | PetEdge.com You add a capful to their water bowl. My cats use it as well. Its like $12 if you buy it retail, but I bought in bulk from PetEdge for $4 each if you buy 12.
And then this is the gel I use: Fresh Breath Gel, NO Brushing Required I bought this stuff from Petco. Copper's teeth have stayed healthy with it. Gwennie came to us with really bad teeth and hers have improved so far. Can't say if its solely the additives but it certainly makes their breath more bearable.

Not sure about that brand, but there are a number of products containing clorhexidrine (sp?) that are added to the drinking water to fight tartar. After I had dental surgery I was amused to find that the dentist prescribed a similar product for me! I found two or three brands at Petsmart. I've started giving it to Pepper, but it's to early to tell if it's helping.
