Default Aggresive basslets?

I have an 18 month old basset. Last week we had her spayed and the operation and all that went well. The vet wanted to speak to me after and raised his concern that my basset is the most aggressive he has ever seen. He said that she is dangerous and acted extremely stressed during the day. My thoughts were that obviously she was freaked out! He had to hurt her! She has never acted strange like that around us, we have taken her for doggie fun runs and she didn't even care about other dogs, she Allows our neighbors kids to pull her ears and again she couldn't care less. When I told him I disagree he said well she won't do it around us, and because we treat her like a child she is acting this way, and that one day when we do have kids she will bite them and possibly kill them do you think his comments could be true at all and that I am being silly for thinking he is wrong?

Oh for goodness sake! Of course she was stressed; she had surgery and probably was in some pain and didn't feel well. If she was being aggressive, as he claims, wouldn't it show up at home, too?

I would find a new vet, and if there is some concern she could be aggressive, have her evaluated by a dog behaviorist.

Find a new vet anyone who would make a comment like when you have children he could kill them is ridiculous. Poor girl she was probably terrified and from the way your vet sounds he probably did not make it a very understanding caring enviornment for the dog. How has the dog been other times at the vet. If you had an aggressive dog on your hands you would have seen signs of it yourself.

Well -- don't think that Vet passed Bedside Manner 101!! I think that Boomers Mom is right. For your own peace of mind maybe you just should make an appointment with a dog behaviorist. But I am sure by 18 months you would notice aggression in your own dog.... trust me you notice (I've been there but not with a basset). Maybe it is just the vet -- put your thinking cap on and try to remember past experiences with this vet -- has the vet every shown you signs that you don't like? No compassion or impatience with you or your pet? Another thing is reaction to anesthasia (I cannot spell this word) .. we once had a kitten who turned into a she-devil when coming down ... we as humans can react in different way to different drugs so I am sure our pets can too!!!!

That's the craziest thing I've heard in a long time. You're taking this dog out of his element, sticking it in a cage until they can get to him, poking and putting needles into him....he's thirsty, hungry and probably has to go to the bathroom. If you hadn't seen any red flags come up in your home, I'd watch for awhile but wouldn't worry myself sick over it. Barney goes in next week to be neutered and I'm sure he'll be grouchy.....I would be.

Additional thought....I've had vets who really hated people but as long as they were for the animals, i accepted that....but if I had one tell me what that one said to you, I'd never go back. Where is the compassion for a dog that is under a high stress situation. This just really riles me up...gotta go have some coffee.

I would change vets, if they can't tell the difference between an animal that is in clear distress and completely stressed and a potential child killer then I honestly think they should not be in the job.

I only have a couple things to add to this - the first would be - good thing this vet never had the opportunity to meet my Lucy - she would have been happy to show him what an aggressive Basset can be like. Before we moved to where we currently live and we went to a different vet – she would hide under the chair at the vet’s office and when he would walk in the room she would start showing her teeth and growing up a storm – and he would laugh every time and say I love that dog. And when I asked him why – he said because she let him know how she felt – she was expressive. And eventually over the years he won her over. Where she use to have to be muzzled to get her nails done – now she’s not happy about it – but knows it’s something that has to be done before she’ll get her cheese.

The second – you couldn’t pay me enough to ever walk into the door of his office again. But ya know, on the flip side – it’s better to find out now before you have a health issue that you need to find a new doctor for your fur baby. I’m sorry you had to go through it though.

Welcome MrsF and furbaby. What's her name and we want pictures. Like everyone has already said I would find another vet. Sometimes I think our pets know best. We went to one vet and he seemed to not even like dogs. We changed vets and the new one would take kisses and talk to the dog. She seems to really love the girls unlike the previous one. And last but not least if he thought one of mine was aggressive he would have to worry about me hurting him and not one of the 3 amigos.
