Default Lame Leg

A couple of days ago I started to think Monty was protecting one of his hind legs and then yesterday it developed into a limp quickly followed by him not wanting to put any weight on it at all (not easy when you weigh 34kg!). I took him to the vet today who had a feel of him and decided to give him metacam to see if things improved. I don't think she'd had many dealings with Bassets as she seemed to know less than I did! She wants to see him again in two days and if it's still bothering him she wants to do an x-ray. I just wonder if this is necessary and would it show up things like Pano? I haven't noticed him doing anything out of the norm and he's still wrestling with Olly every chance he gets. No whimpers or anything but just sad to see him hobbling around.

I want my furball to have four legs again...

We are dealing with the same thing with Winston. The vet thinks he pulled a muscle in his hind leg, as he was limping. We were going to let it work itself out, but when he was in obvious pain (crying, being bitey) we put him on something to make him feel better. Vet said we'd do X-rays if he didn't improve. He's still got a slight limp but isn't nearly in the pain he was. I'm letting it go a bit longer before we do X-rays.

maybe. 1. pano general begin on a fron leg not a back it is not common to begin with a rear leg. 2. inorder for pano to show up onb an x-ray it must be caught at the right stage and then the bone will look mottled. in the rear the most common orthopeadic issue is luxating pettella the knee cap slips out of place, but the general pop back in no prolonged limping unless it remains displaced.

Soft tissue injuries acl/cccl tears strain sprain will not show up on an xray,

If the vet is not familliar with basset orthopeadics it is quite possible to miss something or thing something that is normal is amiss.

Ugh! I wish you were in the states, more specifically Virginia. We have a client (a DVM) who specializes in dog orthopedics (and surgery).

I hope it turns out to be a simple quick heal Monty.

Thanks guys! I think we'll hold off on the xrays, seems a bit extreme too quickly. If things don't improve I'm going to ask for one of the more senior vets so that we get a second opinion on it. Bassets aren't too common round these parts so the vets aren't too hot on things (just in my opinion).

Arghhhh, did someone say snake????????

If you can trek all the way to the midlands I know a great orthopaedic specialist who has a vast knowledge of bassets.
