Maezie has gotten to play with Carley 3 times since Christmas..one being last nite as I had my daughter and family for supper. Geez...she is really growing and is bigger than Maezie...but I see her growing by the day. Also my other daughter has a "min pin" and they got to play twice. So fun to watch them all play. Friday I will be puppy sitting while Kelly works..so looks like Maezie will have another play day...but my oh my...I'll be busy with the both of them. I can tell a difference in their personalities..Carely is more aggressive ( don't think that's the right word) She barks alot more and seems more onery. I have two questions though...how long do you think it will be until Maezie sleeps through the nite? She is getting up approx. 1-3 times. Also..people have suggested puppy pads for training. I never have used them because I just trained my other dogs to go outside..but they have told me use them while training to go out. I don't want Maezie to become dependent on them. Advice on both questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Skip the pee pee pads start right off going outside. I think Barney stopped getting up in the middle of the night at 4 months. He does get up though around 5 to go out. I know some people will post some good info on housebreaking that will help. When they are this young though the progress is very slow. I know bassets take awhile. Barney is now able to stay home for a few hours and not have an accident but he does not have a crate. I would reccommend using a crate it worked wonders for my three other dogs. I just cannot stand the thought of another crate in the house. Also do not give your puppy free reign of the house this will help prevent alot of accidents from happening you will be able to keep a close eye on her. I also am a frim believer in schedueled water breaks. I know leave water down all the time but not in the beginning puppies can get bored and will just keep drinking the water and this makes it difficult to come uo with a potty break schedule. I also use a key word in the beginning I say outside then as barney starts to pee I say potty then praise. I know alot of people have success with a bell at the door.Consistency is very important. Barney stopped having accidents in the house when we were home a month after we got him however he could not be trusted loose when no one was home. I left him the other day and he was let out once in the middle of the day and he did not have an accident but he is 6 months old.

I don't know about puppies but we keep a throw rug by the back door in front of washer so in case she doesn't make it till we let her oput she will piddle on that. Doggie door goes in next week pretty excited lol good luck with your puppy adventure

each dog is different and how you handle it can make a difference see creating a nighttime ritual
I tend to be a heavy sleeper so I set an alarm rather than rely on the dog. I found by 4-5 months they could go all night sometimes sooner. a lot of also depend how the settle sleeping vs resting but awake etc and what making it through the night means 6 hours 8hours or more. pee pads are ok if you are paper training the puppy and that is the end goal It going in a spot in the house. if not you end up extending the house training and making it harder because you have to train two seperate substrate preference and untrain the paper/pad prefference in the end more than twice the work see Housetraining Your Puppy for the importance of substrate preferrence Quote:

I would not use pee pads because I think it just makes it longer to potty train. Tito is 6 months old now and he sleeps from 6pm to 8am every night, keeping them on the same food schedule is important. He does not have accidents normally but I keep a good eye on him. Unlike Barney he will still pee if I am not careful even when I am home but I think that is because he is normally out home sleeping or we are out on a walk, playing at the park etc so he is not as use to solo play on the floor when he is doing that I take him out every thrity minutes, if we are actively playing it is more like every 15 or 20 minutes still. As for sleeping through the night when I first got him he was waking up every two hours ahhhh but by three months it was only once a night, at five months he started sleeping in my bed and making it through the whole night. Good luck!

I agree in that I wouldn't use the pee pads...it's alot of work to train them in the beginning but shorter time without the pads. Barney was way too young when I got him (7 weeks) but I put him in my bed from day one. For about a month we got up twice a night, another month of once, and then he slept through. It's amazing but one day it just clicks for them.

Thanks so much for the advice. I have ruled out puppy pads...and going to continue to train her to go out. She does good outside but then there has been quite a few accidents inside. I do keep a close eye on her though. Also I give her water breaks through the day. Geeesh...this is the hard part of having a puppy. I'm still using the crate too. Just before I posted on here...I had her out..it is very cold here...she snoops around a minute then runs to the door shaking...brought her in and she piddled on the kitchen floor...off to the crate she went. I mind it more than she does. I like to hold her all the time. Guess I'll keep doing what I've been doing...just takes alot of patience. Have to keep thinking this is whats to be expected at 10 weeks...I do scold her when she goes inside..but gets a treat when she goes outside. Just have to keep on keepin on. Thanks again.

if you are not doing so you need to go out with her and give her a treat/reward as she is going or just finishing. Many people make the mistake of letting the dog out then rewarding them when they come in. the dog is going to link the reward to coming in not eliminating out side. timing is critical the dog is going to associate with what it is doing at the time with the reward. you really only have a second two at the most to reasonable assure the association with the behavior you want/. same goes with scolding if after the fact it really serves not purpose and make you look kind of scary to the dog. If in the middle of going it is not really scold but a disruptive stimuli. a sharp no! can cause the dog to stop carry outside and reward when finished another thing that can help later on like when going a car trip is to teach the dog to go on cue see Housetraining Your Puppy Quote:
personally I use the same command for both find-a-spot (one word.) |

[/QUOTE] I do go out with her...and a treat is always in my pocket. Also when she goes to the door I have her go back out in the yard...but she always runs to the door. Yes I do scold her with a NO! I think she knows because now she goes in beside my bed where I can't see...I need to keep the bedroom door closed. I've trained several puppies...and hard headed ones at that. I'm just doing as I always did with them. Eventually I'll get her trained. Don't think I can expect too much at this age...it will just take time. Thanks for the advice. I'll keep everyone posted as time goes on. Oh something else...when I want her to go out...I say.."come on..lets go pee pee" So she gets used to those words. |

2. because it is sucessful the dog is self rewarding ie eliminaion removing pressure is pleasurable it is likely to go in the same place over and over again. that said some use at teather/leash attached at their waist and to the dog to prevent sneaking off. If i did this there would be either a dead dog or a dead human from constanly tripping over it but if you can manage it does work. |
