Exclamation Basset Hound not eating!! Help?

Our 1 year old basset hound boy seemed to have gotten sick about a month ago, had diherea a little bit of vomiting wouldn't eat anything but moist food.. took him to the vet and they tested him for parvo (it was negative) well now, he's not eating anymore has gotten scary skinny and don't know what to do. last time we took him to the vet other than the parvo testing they did a feces testing and said everything looked fine other than he is very under weight. All they did was reccomend an expesive dog food that he didn't really care for either.

Anyone have these issues? seems as though the vet has no answers for us.

Please help! i'm worried.

What is he currently eating and how much are you feeding him? Have you tried mixing moist food with the kibble?
I would take him to another vet for a second opinion as well. Just to be on the safe side, but then I'm a bit of an overprotective mom with my boys.

See if you can get him to eat cooked chicken and rice for now,to get him started, then find another Vet.Has he gotten into any garbage, were people feeding him from the table, does he chew things a part like wood ,toys ,anything he gets a hold of. Was there any food that you have tried that he liked at all.Is he drinking? Get some pedylyte at the store usually in the baby isle and get some into him so he doesn't dehydrate. Worse comes to worse you can force feed him just not too much at one time because his stomach has not held anything for a while ,is he pooping normally? Sorry for all the questions but it is important to know.

Definitely take him to another vet, maybe get some blood work done. In the meantime, mix something irresistible into his kibble. People food isn't optimal for dogs on a regular basis, but if it entices him to start eating, then I am all for it. Sometimes the ends justify the means. Keep us posted.

well we had him on the same food as our labrador, which was beniful. he stopped eating that, so we started him on moist food, which was only the ground up stuff, he didn't want the chunky.
Now hes not eating again, ive tried the ground moist food, the ground moist food with regular food mixed in, ground moist food mixed with moist to meaty, but nothing. our lab had puppies, and we've started them regular puppy food. instead of the regular dog food, we tried using the puppy ground moist food and the puppy chow. he took to it maybe a couple days ago but now he doesn't want it. he's curious as far as what were eating but not the dog food.

yeah i use to take them to the vet non stop when something was wrong, even something simple.. but for some reason every time i take them they end up wanting to do weird tests that don't make sense as far as their situation and it end up costing a lot for just one visit.

At least he's eaten something - not an ideal diet though.

Best to get him to another vet to get a second opinion. I take it they checked his teeth/mouth etc to see if there was anything wrong there that might stop him wanting to chew?

mmmm... chicken pot pie....

Has he always been a picky eater? was there ever a time before that he always ate lotsa dog food, wet or dry? but now there's been a change?

another thought is, does he get nauseous and that's why he avoids food? dogs can be nauseous but not vomit... so sometimes it's hard to tell. i mention that because Worm got a 2 week course of acid blocker, which seemed to help his tummy issues. the idea being that his nausea was related to too much acid... it did seem to help.

if he's getting scary skinny (we were there earlier in December, tho Worm's situation sounds different than yours), i'd think it'd be good to do more of a workup and bloodwork to figure out what it might be... esp if he keeps losing weight. Worm had lost ~5 lbs and looked really bad. and to keep track of his weight every week so you know if he's losing or staying the same.

also like Bubbad says, does he drink? if not drinking they gave Worm fluids too, which helped his weight a bit. he was dehydrated.

Have him retest and look for giardia. Sometimes you have to take fecal samples over a certain period of time to get a positive result. Barney had giardia and it started with diarrhea and he had at least a month of difficulty gaining weight he was not scary skinny but you could see his ribs. I would also have bloodwrok like others have said.
