Default Walking in the winter

I usually take barney on a 1.5 mile walk is there a temperature where it is too cold to do this? The whole walk is on the ocean so it gets pretty windy and cold. I would make sure he had a coat on.

He does not need a coat in NE Mass. I never seen it cold enough I was concerned for their well being out side.

that and a 1.5 mile walk would take the average person 20min? Maybe 25 with sniffs and potties and the like? even if it's 10 degrees that's not long enough to hurt hound or human I wouldn't think...

Henry chose to swim twice today while it was cold here in Arkansas, if he is daft enough to do that then i'm sure yours can walk for 25 mins!

Sometimes here it gets so cold that they can't walk from the house to the car - before they get there their feet are so cold they are trying to pick them all off the ground at once.

If it gets that cold, it's too cold to go for a walk. Otherwise they should be fine.

OK thanks I have never had a big dog my girls are real babies about the cold rain snow etc.I really love our walks je is very pokey when we re heading away from the house but on the way back he picks up the pace and I get a nice speed walk. I did notice when we would wait at my son's bus stop he would shiver so I was worried he was cold that is why I started putting a coat on him. I noticed all of a suddenno one was walking their dogs so I figured long walks might be a bad idea when it was cold although we are being very spoiled with mild weather this winter,

Shivering is a mechanish to warm the body it peopole because we lost so much body hair it is not very effective and an indication that additional steps should be taken that is not the same in dogs. Also you will notice when moving the shivering stops it is the muscle contraction of shivering that make the muscle work creating heat but when actual exercising that becomes unecessary.

The reason walks stop in the winter is not the dogs but the humans.

Ha Ha Soundtrack -- Paisley did just that this morning. Let her out for her piddle and wondered why she was taking soo long -- she was sitting on her rump with all four off the ground trying to decide how to make it the five feet to the door without putting a paw down.-- its only -22 (thats about -8F). She finally made i in gobbled her breakfast and is presently laying in the sun like a cat!
