Libby has entropion in her right eye. We talked to the vet about it when we adopted her in July. They gave her antibiotic drops that help her eye, but the condition came right back once we ran out of the stuff.
Our vet has told us that the long term solution is for her to have eye surgery. Has anyone gone through this with their basset? Any advice, information, pictures etc? Her eye with entropion does not seem to bother her. I can imagine that it may cause her pain. That eye does tear more so I wipe it off once a day. Never seen any sign of infection or anything like that. The surgery is going to cost $300-$400 dollars. The vet also has said that it may require more than one surgery so I am trying to plan for that financially. Last edited by jaylii9; 12-21-2011 at 03:50 PM. |

Entropion means that the eyelid is turning inward and the lashes are rubbing on the eye. The only remedy for that is surgery, AFAIK.
Normally a dog would be diagnosed with entropion while still young, as they are born with this condition. It never hurts to get a second opinion, and prices at vets can vary widely.

Our vet said Monty might have this when we got him but once he reached six months thankfully the eyelashes had turned out a bit. She said that because he was so droopy it could be a problem and talked of giving him a face lft where a bit of skin woul be taken from the dome and that would give a nice eye lift. I know they can also take skin from the eye.

Thanks to those who responded and thanks for the clarification on the condition being entropion Soundtrack.
Libby is 3 years old to the best of our knowledge and is a rescue so we don't know her history at all. We are with a vet who we trust a lot and is highly regarded with rescue organizations in our city so I don't think we will get a second opinion. When I clean her eye, I can see that he lower eyeashes rub on the eye. |
