Default Nail trim fail :(

In my quest to be a better momma I have been trying to stay on top of the nail and ear situation on the Annie dog. This means that the poor girl puts up with me checking her ears every day and cleaning when necessary, and trimming a little bit of her lovely acrylics every other day until we get them short enough. She hates this stuff...HATES it. After trying to clean her ears and ending up chasing her around for a half hour, I have learned to leash her prior to touching her ears or nails. She tolerates the ear cleaning much better these days. Still fusses a bit and puts whatever ear I am touching on the ground, but it gets done. But when it comes to the nails, oh boy. It's a struggle for both of us and I generally don't get a chance to trim them all in one sitting.

Well today was no different...a struggle. And I cut the quick on one of her nails I expected her to yelp or something. Nope, nothing other than the standard struggle. But I stopped then, saw the blood, started to freak out (cuz I have no styptic powder!!!!), then instead of over-reacting (which is my usual modus operandi), I remembered reading somewhere online that one could use corn starch if they cut the quick and didn't have any styptic. It worked!!!!

Needless to say, I now have a small thingy of styptic powder ordered and on it's way LOL. The good news is, she is completely indifferent and her nail seems to be fine. For those in the know, is this something I should keep an eye on to make sure it doesn't get infected? Do they get infected? I imagine it is possible, especially due to the location, but not sure how often it happens.

I have 2 Bassets and a "struggle" puts it mildly how it goes when it is nail time. I have now invested in a dremel. It is less stress on them and it isn't as dramatic. I do it every 2 weeks and that way I don't have to take that much off. I found that even at the vets, my mild mannered Bassets turn into monsters and will bite during nail trimming. I am embarrassed how they act at the vet. So this is my alternative. Good luck

I can't sing the praises of my little dremel loud enough! Prior to it PB would whine loud enough on the balcony that my neighbors would ask, "Oh my is the puppy ok? That sounds awful!!" I'd begrudgingly say, "She's fine... just protesting her nail appointment!" So embarrassing we have quite the actress on our hands. After the dremel all we have is a little minor paw wrestling & deep sighs only till the cheesy treat! Worth a shot!

When I worked as a groomer I was so amazed at how dramatic dogs are about having their nails trimmed. 10 years later my dachshunds don't complain as much but whenever any of my dogs see me go into the drawer where the clippers are they hide. I keep meaning to try a dremel. I clip Barney's nails every 10 days. There is not alot to clip but it helps to keep the quick shorter.

It is theoretical possible to get and infection through an open quick but I have never once seen it happen if it does occur it is really rare.

FWIW flour works as well as steptic powder but to be honest with you I don't use anything to me they work no better than letting it clot on its own.

Wait til she's asleep, then do her nails.

Check your PM Henry's Mum, taking you up on your offer Thanks!

Thanks for the replies, good to know that an infection isn't something else I need to keep an eye out for.

Thanks for sending this along to us! Got it today and would have tried it out but it was wine and snacks day at our dog park.

After the blood filters through my Chardonnay stream..err...ummm, strike that, reverse it. We will see how close I can get the Dremel to Annie tomorrow
