Hi All...I'm new to the site and just registered. I'll be getting a new little girl tomorrow who is 8 wks. old. I live in Pa and she and her sister ( my daughter it getting one) will be flown in from Kansas. This is a very big deal to us. We picked them out online and called the owners. It will be quite an adventure going to the airport to get them. This is our first experience with Basset Hounds. I've been reading up on them. I read that they are hard to house break...is this true? I'm looking forward to reading the discussion and hopefully comment on them. I don't have a picture of her yet...but hope my daughter will take one so I can post it. Her name will be "Maezie" My Mothers middle name was Mae..that's how we came up with the name. She passed Jan 1st,2011 and loved dogs. I feel this is a Christmas gift from her from heaven. I live alone..so Maezie will be great company. As I said...looking forward to reading everything I can about them. Thank You

Hi Maezie and Maezie's Mom....welcome to the forum. Can't wait to see the pictures. How excited you must be. Every time someone comes on here with a new pup, I want another one. I didn't have too much trouble housebreaking Barney...but I was home most of the time which was a big help. You'll get some great advice on this forum for any questions you might have. Keep us updated....

Hi Barney's pal! Thanks for replying to my post about house breaking. I don't think it will be that hard either because I am home all the time. I'm anxiously awaiting a call from Kansas to know when my daughter and I can pick up our little girls. My camera isn't working so either I'll get another one or my daughter will hopefully take pics. Although I think my computer won't run the installation CD to use a camera. My computer smarts are'nt that great. I have been reading alot of discussions...wanting to learn more to read all about the cuties.

I live in Pa...we have found that they are quite expensive here. We were leary about going online...but did..and found them for half the price. This is a first for my daughter and I to do anything like this. It was a big decision but hopefully the right one. Here they sell from anywhere to 700-900 dollars. We are getting ours for 400..flight and all. We wanted puppies as well..and my daughter and her husband are getting one for my grandchildren for Christmas. They are sisters. We live close to each other so they will be able to play together often.

Welcome & Congrats on your new arrival - you'll have so much fun!
Monty was quite easy to house train, just make sure you take her out at least every hour and give lots of praise for doing her business. we actually found our Basset easier to housebreak than our labrador! can't wait to see her

Welcome Maezie & Mary! so excited for you.
from our limited experience, i was easy to housetrain, better than the dachshund before me. but they got me at 16 weeks, and from there, it took about 6 weeks of constantly following me around, & picking me up to go outside when i started to wee. they got angry with me when i fully wee'd before they could get to me. i had about a dozen accidents. i'm good at peeing where other dogs pee, but that's also because we had to do that at my breeders so i suppose i had some housetraining early on already. the momma dogs & older dogs would get mad at us if we peed on our sleeping spot. also, this time they skipped the newspaper/piddle pads, just made all in house spaces off limits for peeing. (they didn't do that with the doxy & he got confused, would pee in the house) we do hope it goes well for you! sometimes bassets are quite hard to housetrain, so just giving you a heads up about the range of experiences we hear abou there. --Worm
