Default Winston's Limping

My sweet, mischievous baby boy has a bit of a problem. I noticed on Saturday that he was standing a bit oddly - kind of crooked. But it was only one time I noticed and he had no other sign of an issue, so I brushed it off. Then Sunday morning, my husband said he thought Winston was limping on his back right leg. I watched him walk and agreed, but really it was only slight. He was playing and moving around without hesitation, and since the vet is closed on Sunday, I thought a wait and see approach was appropriate.

Now here we are and it's 1 AM. Winston and I were asleep on the sofa and he woke me to go out. He's limping more and actually seems to be in pain. He's grumpy and growly, wants me near him but doesn't want me to be near him. It's his pain talking. I'll be on the phone with the vet as soon as they open and there as soon as they can get me in. In the meantime, is there anything I can do for his pain? Poor baby can't settle to sleep.

Awww Winston I have no advice to offer. Just here to let you know that you're not awake alone.

And the big question...he didn't wake Molly did he? If it's not one thing...it's your brother

Hoping the vet can sort Winston out as soon as possible and that he can be pain free and into mischief once again.

He's finally settled on the dog bed. I think the idea of climbing on the sofa makes him wince. Molly has it all to herself. Here I sit, calculating grades for my students since I am a worrying Momma. He's stopped crying and following me. Sleep, sweet boy.

He's hanging his hind end off the bed - I think that is more comfortable for him. Vet for sure tomorrow. I think he may have jumped wrong or something. He's fine otherwise. Really, it's always something.

Thanks for the middle of the night (here in PA) support

Winston, dude, so sorry your leg's not feeling well.

i suppose it could be a "pano" sort of thing, given your age, which should be self-resolving, just painful at the time. i hope you'll sleep well the rest of the night.

let us know what happens, k? you have a nice Mommy. and Molly will be a nice sister to you. you're in good hands (paws).

I just did a quick search on Pano and it does seem to fit. Good news is that it's not something he'll have forever, if this is in fact Pano. Thanks for that tip, Worm.

For any sort of leg problem or injury I normally suggest crate rest, especially once the dog is on pain meds, to avoid making it worse and give it a chance to heal.

He mellowed for the night and slept in the same spot until I woke him for potty and breakfast. He's back to resting on his own and seems to not want to play or move more than necessary. Vet opens in 10 minutes and I'll take the earliest appt they can give me. I think xrays are needed...just to be sure. And some pain meds. There doesn't seem to be a visible injury and I don't recall him getting hurt...doesn't mean anything though.

Thanks everyone, I knew you'd be a comforting voice.

the one thing against Pano is, Pno generally starts with a fore limb not a back one. If he will let you touch his legs you can start off squeezing each bone in the rear leg he does not limp on in the middle of the bone. The is the upper bone, thigh/femur and the two in the lower leg. the dog should not indicate pain; Try with the bad leg if he indicates pain simply by squeezing in the middle of the bone there realy is not anything other than Pano that causes this.

Sof tissue injuries are way motre common while Pano can caught on x-ray it must be at the right stage to be seen . The get and x-ray and hear nothuing is broken and are relieve when in reality bones heal faster than soft tissue injuries and unlike soft tissue injuries the healed area is stronger than ti was before that never happens with a soft tissue injury so a bone break IMHO is general better than a soft tissue injury ie sprain,

A coomon rear leg problem with basset is luxating pettella that is the knee cap slips out of place the symptoms of Winston are not consisten with this unless hte knecapp never went back in place, which is very unusual
