Hey everybody,
I'm very happy to find this site. My wife and I recently got a cute little basset hound puppy and we couldn't be happier. He started off kind of rocky with a Parvo infection. But, with help from the Vet and lots of pedialyte, little Amos pulled through. Our task that we are working on now is housebreaking. We do not like spanking for making bodily fluid messes in the house, so we watch him closely and take him outside when it looks like he needs to do his business. It kind of works, but getting him to walk outside on his own is a little tricky. Hopefully this works, but if anyone has any trick or tips, I'm all ears. Thank you all for reading. |

Hi, and welcome to you and little Amos!
Spanking, in my opinion, teaches them nothing but fear, which brings nothing good behavior-wise. Persistence, patience, and constant monitoring are all you can do. Reward for doing right and encourage correct behavior. Basset puppies take a long time to housebreak...Winston is 10 months and finally getting it. Sort of. Many will be along to offer you advice, but the key is to remember that activity causes a need to potty. I always potty them when they wake up and when they play hard. Also, after they eat...it tends to "inspire" them. How old is Amos? And please post pics...we love pics around here! Good luck!

Welcome, love the name amos! I second the need for pictures!
Tito is five months plus right now and he is doing well as far as having no accidents because every time he wakes out he goes out after playing really actively for fifteen to twenty minutes he goes out (basically if he walks away from play I grab him and take him out) also if he has just eaten or 10 minutes or so after he drinks a lot of water. I do not know from what you said but I would say having a crate helps a lot also set feeding times he does not eat it all when it is down the first time he will learn the second time! Food rewards while outside help. Also now that Tito is older I am thinking about bell training him because he does not bark or anything when he needs to go. That being said we do not have problems because I take him out all the time. I think he has had maybe one pee accident in the past two months. He only ever had one poo accident in the house. Good luck!! |

Bassets love food and treats! That really helped house breaking Otis. We also invested in a doggie door recently. Not one accident since he's been able to go out as he pleases. He's just over 6 months old now.

Wecome to Amos, need piccies please.
Bella is now 16 months old, she was 14 weeks old when I got her and came from a farm where she'd been kept in a shed, so had no idea about house training, she wouldn't "go" outside. But after months of constant vigilance and basically every hour being outside with her encouraging her to "go wee wee" or "go hurry up" when she produced the goods she got a treat or we made a massive fuss of her. We had to go outside with her and when she was small took her to the part of the garden I wanted her to do her business on a lead, where she tends to go all the time now. Ignore the accidents in the house, all that does is make them go somewhere you won't see them, it is really hard not to get mad though. After our hard work and we really did have some arguments about whose turn it was etc etc we now have Bella weeing on command, and I can tell her to go hurry up and she tries her best to please. Always a lot quicker if there's a treat in my hand though. Try using a specific pet product for cleaning up accidents, they break down the enzymes and make it harder for your dog to find where he's been before, I use biological washing powder even after all this time Bella will still have the odd accident if we're out a little longer than normal, or if it's raining outside and I can't get her outside in time. Good luck. |

Here is Amos. He is just a little bundle of love. I wanted to call him Flash, but when my wife came up with Amos, I though it fit him better. He will be 11 weeks old this Friday.
