Default Torn edges of ear

Hiya Basset Pals,

Yes, me again. me is sooo needy lately! asking all my ??s.

we were dealing w/all my other stuff, i didn't mention that there are 3 little tears on the edge of one ear. like little splits. but there are 3 of them and they been there over a week now & if you pull it apart a little, it is red and still not closing up or anything. and now, like my pal Henry here, I am actively sucking on my ear and licking on them lots.

never had this happen before. do we need to do anything?
maybe clean it with hydrogen peroxide? anything else? we figure it will heal in time??

Hmm, chapped ears? IDK I'd stay away from hydrogen peroxide, that is not a good cleaner, it can also kill healthy tissue. Soap and water, neosporin, and a snood to keep them out of reach. JMHO.

Hey Wormie

Maybe mummy can make you a snood so you cant dip them in your dinner or soup. Henry has not ever made them sore sucking them but maybe yours need to dry out a little.

Murray would be humiliated if he knew I posted this picture of him:
You can use the top part of a pair of panythose instead of making a snood- it will keep the splits out of food and water until they heal. Anytime Murray's had splits in his ears they've healed really fast though.

Poor Wworrmmie you are having troubles lately!!!! Maybe it is dry skin from not drinking enough??? The pantyhose thing sounds very interesting and not too too hot like a sweater sleeve would be ---- thats what my Mom is going to try to make me for when it is super cold like -40 -- a sorta turtleneck snoody ....... we all promise not top tell Boomer and Woody and especially Mikey that you wear your moms panyhose!!!!

Murray you look like one laid back dude lounging on your bed eating your breakfast!! Not every basset gets breakfast in bed -- how do you do it??? I happen to be the queen of sleeping in and I don't get served like that!

I'd go with the Polysporin and a snood.

perixide actually eats away the new healing tissue. Clean it off with a little alcohol, let it dry and then you can put liquid band aid on it, if the snood is not an option! He may lick the liquid band aid off after a while if he's sucking his ears though.

Hahaha, y'all made me laugh & smile. Murray's Mom, we won't say anything to Murray, but hmmm... how come i feel a little jealous 'bout this 'breakfast in bed' thing? Murray looks so comfy & clean w/his ears back like that, as Paisley says! mine's always in my food & water.

we aren't sure how the splits in my ears came to be. liked your suggestions that maybe they are chapped? they are also in the area that tends to get the dirtiest & muddy, maybe that caused them to split? my auntie suggested my ears got chewed on by another dog, but not sure 'bout that.

THANK YOU for telling us about the hydrogen peroxide, everyone. We had some to help induce vomiting if i ate bad stuff again, so my person thought she'd use it to clean me up... good thing she asked here before she did anything!

Bowsah-- what is liquid bandaid? is that like neo/polysporin ointment?

also, YEAHS i needs a Snood!! i wuz going to ask Rosco & Layla's Mommy to make something like that for me, maybe i'll ask her again. Panythose is a good (but embarrassing) idea, tho my person doesn't have any to spare right now... might have to use my chip clip on my ears to hold 'em up.

thanks again, everyone-- Worm

How often do you get a bath ? It could be his ears at the bottom are getting caked with dirt and from that getting sore then cracking. Maybe the ends need washed more often and dryed to prevent it from happening again once they are healed.
