Default Purebred? help.

so mom has been wanting a basset hound for years and since she got a 1/2 acre, i decided i'd get one for her for christmas.
i posted an ad and got a reply for the perfect basset... well i guess perfect in my terms

2 year old male
neutered
has akc papers
housetrained

i go and pick him up and my mom comes over to have a look at him and she thinks he may be part beagle because he has medium flappy ears, but not very long. but, i thought if a dog is akc registered, they had to be pure. correct me if i'm wrong, sorry, i never owned a basset... maybe huskies, malamute, beagles, shih tzu, yorkies... we have a paper of his family tree as well. no matter what, we're keeping him, he's a GREAT dog.

Welcome!

I am not sure how all the papers work, but IMHO he certainly looks like a basset hound! They don't always have super long ears.

What is his name?

My Molly is pure Basset but her ears are on the short side. All her sisters had long ears. Now Molly also has some genetic abnormalities, so I blame that. But yeah, yours looks very Basset-y and cute!

thanks guys. yeah, we've had beagles before, so mom kept focusing on his ears, however i was looking at pictures of other basset hounds and i noticed some had short ears too. his name is bacon ! (: i didn't name him, i thought it would be best to stick to the same name his previous owner gave him out of respect since he passed away. i never owned a basset, but i can say he has to be the best dog i ever came across so i wonder if all bassets are so well behaved. i will take side pictures of him once he's awake

Bacon! A very cute name. My Boomer is 100% basset, but doesn't have super-long ears, either.

They are just biding their time thinking of naughty things they want to do.

A basset that is not specifical bred for conformation often have many trait that apear beaglly as they tend to regress from the bloodhound type head to that of early foundation stock whith a more dome likehead and shorter flater ears. they also can tend to have straighter and longer legs as well.

That said all kind of chicanery can and does occur in purefred registies, happen all the time because in general the registry relies on the breed to provide the correct information with very little to no evidence. That said AKC is better than most of the regestries out there at investigating and disciplining rougue breeder that falsify information. They have not yet however gone to require DNA as part of the pedigree which is the only waly to be completely sure One can then verify the parentage of the litter

He is adorable . Correct me if I am wrong but AKC do not guarantee a purebred. I have spoken with breeders who have said it is quite easy to get akc papers on a litter not expensive either and easy to obtain. AKC is better than other papers but I have met some akc registered dogs that came from questionable breeders at best.
