Default In a similar vein - advertising

So as a follow-up to my previous question....

When you were looking for your dog, did you find it through advertising? A listing in the paper? On an online puppy site? The breeder's/rescue's website? What, if anything, about the site/ad prompted you to call/write to find out more? Or was it "the only game in town"? Were there sites/listings/ads that you didn't respond to? What turned you off?

I came from a breeder in louisiana. my peeps had gotten their first basset from a breeder in mississippi, but she was sired by a basset from this breeder in LA. They loved the temperment so much that they sought out another basset from the same stock. I'm a cousin. The original decision of the one from Miss in 2000 was borne of extensive research as to good breeders--champion stock show dogs etc etc. She wasn't show quality but they were all excellent pet quality. Research and interviews... Extensive. The other two were rescued. one was seen on alabamas website and they fell in love immediately--poor little homeless houndie with crossed eyes. and then this last one they met at a basset rescue fundraiser. he was so cool and laid back that they knew when they met him.
no ads. no newspapers. kinda seems like those end up being byb's or mills. and we don't like those. while a mill is what brought charlie brown into our lives, it's also what made him so, so timid and unsocialized. boo.

When you live far away from a big city, your choices are limited unless you like to travel, which I don't. The ad that I answered in the newspaper was really very attractive. She had individual professional looking pictures of each dog and I really couldn't help but fall in love. It was the pictures that really sold me...was not interested in any ads without them or the ones with a group picture. I had been checking on Craigslist but was way too leary to check into any of the ads. Had also gone on Petfinder classifieds but once again, it didn't feel right. All in all, it was the wonderful pictures she had.

When we started looking around, we had not yet decided whether we wanted to go through rescue or a breeder. I looked all around the web at various places to see what/who was out there ... rescue sites near and far, Craigslist, BHCA/BHCC breeder directory, Kijiji. Ninja's breeder's ad was on Kijiji, and it caught my eye, since they don't just breed, but do show as well. I don't really remember exactly what was said, but there seemed to be a real emphasis on producing healthy bassets, true to the breed standard, also mentioning spay/neuter contract, and lifetime breeder support. No price was mentioned, and actually neither was her website address, just please contact for more info and to get our website link. So I did.

I was a little nervous at first about the fact that she had advertised on Kijiji, to be honest. However, I also happened to look around at ads in my home province, purely out of curiosity, since we were going to be there for close to a month around Christmas time. Let’s just say, I saw one there from someone I believed I recognized and know is 100% reputable, and it made me feel that yes, you can indeed find a good one on there.

As for Larsen, we found him through good ol' word of mouth.

Word of mouth when we talked to breeders to see who they thought would have a suitable pup.
