This isn't really basset related but I need some advise. I am thinking of adopting a deaf pit bull. I found her on craigslist and her current owner keeps her locked in a pet taxi with a blanket over it all day. She only gets out a few times for water and even then she is put on a tie out outside.
So I am wondering if anyone has any advise or experience with a deaf dog? What are somethings that I should be prepared for? |

There is a site, I think it's deafdogs.com , which is supposed to be very helpful.
Honestly, I'd be a lot more concerned about the lack of socialization than the deafness. There may be some serious behavioral/fear issues as a result.

I would agree with soundtrack espeical if you have ither dogs as terrier of all sorts not just bull tend to be more dog v dog aggressive than other breeds in general
as far as training and such it really is not that much more different than a hearing dog because the vast majority of dogs are more visual oreinted than verbally orient. given a set of cue they are more likely toi respond with physical sight based cues than verbal cues. you just need to keep in mind the dog need to be in line of sight to be able to respond \ |

My mum had alot to do with training deaf dogs. Its not as hard as it looks nd even Henry has visual cues for sit, down etc but i hate to say it wouldnt it be better to contact one of the local rescues about the living conditions of the dog? I would be worried about socialisation too more so than anything else plus not knowing where you live many places round here have the pitt bylaws so i am not sure how difficult socialisation would be if you did rescue the poor dog. Here for example you couldnt go into the dog parks even with a muzzle, coudnt live in certain towns etc. Here is a pitt rescue in Mississippi, maybe call them for info?
