I am looking for opinions at this point as to whether we have a "issue" with Kiara or not. I am mostly trying to see if this is just a breed trait or something else. A little background......We got Kiara when she was 7 weeks old. She is now 10 months old (today actually
) the night we brought her home I had the next two days off work and so I spent all my time with her gave her her first bath, nail trimming and ear cleaning along with the first vet visit. We have a stay at home parent in our house (sadly its not me ) so she has ALWAYS had someone home with her pretty much 24/7 unless we all 4 are gone. She pretty much gets all the attention any one dog could ever want. She is pampered and dotted on like no other. Many people who come to our home say there is a unhealthy attachment on one end or another of the relationship. Its no issue that we can't live with I am just very curious as to how attached other Bassets are to their owners? I would like to know if I will ever again be able to take a bath and or be on the toilet alone again. It is much like having a toddler again

ah haha. I can't go to the bathroom without a sniffing under the door, and a THUMP on the outside of it while he waits. Most of the time, i let him in when i shower, and he just sits there and waits for me...or has been known to come into the shower with me.
Bassets are just about the most social and affectionate dogs i've seen. And by affection i don't mean kisses...bowser will come and just lay his head on me, or lean on me, or come sit on our feet when we're in the kitchen. Alone time is only enforced by TWO gates being put up on the stairs lol I love it though. I don't think anything has adored me this much except my mom *lol*

Haha...!
my person didn't think i seemed very attached to her, as i often scowl & look ornery. But, many peeples have said that i'm always watching her & keepin' an eye on her and knows what she's doing at all times. yeah, i don't follow her around the house so much, i's usually flat basseted on the floor or lying on my daybed. i never get up when my peeple's come home. well they come to me, so why should i? i just lie in my bed. if i really like 'em, i'll thump my tail sometimes. and then when my person leaves my sight, i gets a little worried. we were at the mall, and my person went into Starbucks (excuse me, WHY am i not allowed at Starbucks? i might likes coffee too!), while my Auntie held me. I flat basseted, pointing towards Starbucks & wouldn't move. yeah, we bassets sure r funny creatures. my person says she never saw a dog like me.

She wont stand to have a door separate us if I am in the bathroom she must be also. If I shut the door on her she will try and chew threw it, head bang it and if that don't work howl till the cows come home and then whimper and cry like she is beaten. She sits on the rug when I take a bath or shower and sometimes she even tries to get in!! When I am on the toilet she climbs under my legs and curls up in a ball and sticks her head thru my legs and will remain there the WHOLE time. When I leave she cries, When I come home each day from work or even just in the a.m after taking my kids to school (only gone 15ish mins) she jumps up on me and licks me to death and is SO excited to see me like Ive been gone for days.
On Thanksgiving she went with us to my mothers and I had to run and errand it took about 45 mins. It was cold out so instead of taking her with my mom offered to watch her. When I returned back to my mothers my mom was like here take your dog PLEASE she has cried and howled the whole time. My mom stated that she took her for a walk to go potty and then back inside the house where they sat on the couch and Kiara shook and cried the whole time in my moms lap. My mom LOVES Kiara and Kiara my mom and Kiara has been to grandma's house many a times but never left there for any amount of time without me. When I returned I got about the warmest and wettest greeting from Kiara. I literally think that she thought I had left her like abandoned her there??? I don't know I was just wondering if this is normal and it sounds like it mostly is or if she had speration anxiety which I have heard that dogs can form. I think she just loves her Mama!!! I guess I just have a mini-shadow for the rest of my life

Charlotte is also my shadow basset (she is laying across my feet under the desk as I type this). She follows me from room to room of our house, including the bath room and whimpering at the closet door when I am getting dressed in the walk-in.
Her attention used to be more divided between the hubby and me but it seems like now that I am pregnant if I am in the house Charlotte is at my feet. |

I am glad to see this is normal! Of course I love the affection from my pup and wouldn't have it any other way. My boyfriend doesn't think its normal I let him the bathroom while I shower but if I dont he lays by the door, and since he's still a baby if he has an accident while im taking a longer shower, I would much rather it be on the tile than the carpet.
As of now I am studying for finals and he has moved his bed to be right next to my desk so he's close when he naps. As long as he is friendly with other people (I have seen dogs very attachted to owners that do not let anyone else get close to them) then I am fine with it- and he very much is! |

Paisley too is our velcro dog and likes to be with us at all times and also snorfuls at the bathroom door when not let in -- so usually its me, Paisley and the cat in the bathroom! The cat is also very attached to Paisley -- where I am the dog is, where the dog is , the cat is -- but its the nature of the beast! Bassets just love their humans and well the cat thinks he is a Siamese Basset Cat!

I hate to say it again but i love my thundershirt! Hen was like this, my first post was about how he suffered real anxiety when i left him/in his eyes abandoned him. Since the thundershirt i can leave him in places ie his pen, the house, the horse trailer and the world apears not to end! Granted we do still have a minute of disgruntled grumbles but not the consistant baying of before! Also i think he now realises life does go on without me. I have been able to pee almost alone - he opens the door then goes away again! So my advice, fnd something you want to try and stick with it,be it protected alone time or agadget like ours! Ok thundershirt advert over lol

It does not bother me how attached she is to me, I kinda like it hehe...Its other people who have a problem with it. I just wanted to know if it was abnormal or how many other Basset owners experience it. Besides the family dogs we had growing up Kiara is my first dog who has been just my lil family's pet. She is SUPER friendly outside of the house and in the house she does not seem to mind when other people are by me or hug me or anything like that she just likes to be with me I guess. She is only 10months so I guess I better hunker down and prepare for the duration of a permanent shadow
