Default Fully grown at 6 months

I was at the vet's today with Barney and a woman there has alot of experience with owning bassets and she said Barney would be full grown at 6 months. He weighs 31 pounds and he is 5 months. I will not be fixing barney until he is at least 18 months will he still reach most of his weight by 6 months?

Not sure about that, but my experience is that Molly was still growing and filling out into her "bassety" look at 12 months. Weight gain: she isn't a good comparison because she has Addison's Disease and her Prednisone has affected her weight gain. Winston is just shy of 10 months and he's still growing. I think Barney will probably get bigger. This is just from what I am seeing with my 2...the more seasoned owners will be able to better answer

complete an utter nonsence At six months of only a small number of growth plates are closed if any. This is even more true if the dog is nuetered it will delay growth plate closures. Complete closure of all the plates occurs anywhere from 1 year of age to 18+ months the only way to know for sure is via x-ray.
Large and Giant breed Puppy Growth

at 5 months large breed puppy are about 55% of their adult weight at 6 months ~65% at 8 months 80% and 12 months 95% as you can see the growth rate slows but certainly does not stop by any streach of the imagination. My only though on where such a rediculous statement could come from is in year past before the advent of large breed puppy food most breeder recommend switching basset puppies over to adult food at 6 months of age. . This was because once the growth rate slowed the extra calories of regular puppy food often led to overweight puppies which intern can cause a whole host of orthopeadic developmental problems. but they were not switched to adult food because they were "full grown"

EPIPHYSEAL PLATE CLOSURE IN DOGS

Using the earliest possible times, there are clearly growth plates still open at 6 month and these early closure occur is small fast growing dogs especial those in the toy group but no dog is fully grown at six months

^^Thats what I thought but i have always had small dogs. She has always had basset hounds so I figured maybe she knew what she was talking about. She said Barney would probably 50 pounds I don't know if at 5 months being 31 pounds is considered small. He did have a very hard time gaining weight in the beginning with the giardia. He is lean but to me seems a great weight for his body size. He has never been chubby with a rolly belly I can rub down his sides and feel ribs without having to push down. The other vet I use said he looked great she said many people have the idea puppies should be rolly polly.

they have the length and hight, mostly, but have not fully matured by any means. the ribs will drop and spring out a little ,the head develops more character, lips, anddew lap become more pronounced. they have a whole lot more going on.

When I took my Barney in at 6 mos. he weighed 40 pounds...That was first week in September. I wanted to wait to have him neutered and we got talking about growth plates. He said that the plates were pretty much closed and that he wouldn't get much longer or taller but would fill out. Haven't weighed him since then but would guess he's about 50 lbs. now..more or less. He also said that waiting for neutering was recommended only for the giant breeds...which the bassets aren't. Because I now have a little female pup, they will both be done mid-January. His growth has really slowed down so he may have been right about that part but feel that the vets up here see so few bassets that they generalize too much.

Barney's Mom..1st picture is at 6 months. 2nd is today at 9mos. I can't see where he has grown that much...he seems incredibly long..will have to measure him. Bubdad breeds them so I'll watch for the changes she is talking about.

It has been a long time since I had a puppy but Sidney didn't reach here full weight till she was about 4 years old. I think she was a little weird because she was a very picky eater and would skip meals until I started feeding her better food. I think she was trying to tell me something. And her and her sister were on the go all the time.

My vet recommended to wait until barney was a year or older to fix him. They feel waiting has alot of benefits for a boy so I will wait until 15 moths. Barney is pretty long and slim but very large paws everyone comments on them. From what I have seen bassets have larger front paws anyways the same way my dachshunds do. I love watching his face mature he is so handsome especially his profile.
