Default Food!

So what brand dog food do you guys feed your bassets? I do try to choose good quality dog food, but it can be a bit overwhelming as there's a zillion different feeds out there. Do you guys do dry food only or dry and canned combo or ...??

I use Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers...both dry and canned. I believe that it's given 4 stars out of 5....It's cheaper than most of the non-corn and couldn't be happier with it. Both dog's coats are just beautiful.

I do not feed a single brand because IMHO it is one of the biggest dog food myth out there that dogs do better eating the same thing over and over again. This can only posibly true if we know enough about nutrition and also the probles cause by certain chemical natural and manmaid in the food supply. Humans know a lot more about human nutrition than canine nutrition an there is nobody in their right mind advocateing eating the same things even if it constitues a balanced diet is health because there are too many risk and unknowns so variet is avocated/ But you do not get variet simply by changing brand if the primary protein source alway reman the same etc. Personally I have my own cirteria I look for in dog food. which is likely quite diffentent than most other because my dogs are either field trial, working in agility etc/ I log for hi protein 30 percent or higher. A high prtien diet has been shown to reduce the riisk of soft tissue injuries in working dogs. I also look for realitively high fat 2o% or higher. GDog actual do better at using fat as a fuel source than carbs unlike humans which is the other way round. If you look at the nutritional lable on a bag of dog food you will see fat and protein list but not carbs because carbs are not considered essential to a dogs diet.

I'm like MikeyT I hardly ever feed the same dog food 4 times in a row.If ever I begin to see a noticable change about them in a good way I would stick to something longer. My adults are on Pro Plan weight control (cause I know it works) and I just took Page, the puppy ,off Eukanuba and put her on Wellnes for large breed puppies, and since I have spoiled her I add some canned food to that.

Annie is on Rotations and we change the protein source about every 3 weeks, between lamb and salmon. She also gets a scoop of canned food and I vary those flavors as well.

I thought this was an interesting article about dog food reviews:

I feed Boomer 4health (sold by Tractor Supply Co), as he likes it and it agrees with him. I also mix in a few spoonfuls of canned food in with his morning kibble. I alternate it with Eagle Pack food.

Cost for an 18lb bag is about $19.99 at the store we go to, comparable to other name brand dog food. And it lasts him about a month or so.

Basically, if they are happy and healthy, don't get too caught up in the "this food is better than that one" debate.

not a bad article except for the orginics are healthier BS.
from Wysong which has a lot of good articles on pet food myth provided you avoid the big one that the market which is raw is better than cooked when there is no scientific evidence to back such a claim or that 1 dogs are carnivores, and archtype diet for a dog and wolf are the same. even though it is know known that dogs domesticated themselves by living off the garbare of humans so the actypal diet for dogs is human scraps and waste .

Remember, what works for my dogs or anyone else's dog might not work for yours. Buy the smallest bag you can find of what you want to start trying and if the dog doesn't eat it or you don't like the results, then you aren't out much and you can donate the rest to a shelter. I swear this last year I have to have donated more food that didn't work out with my dogs to shelters than anyone else in my county. (laughs)

I'll stir the pot, and admit that I went back to try the soy vegitarian food from Nature's Recipe. Bowser has never done better, and has completely stopped scratching himself. I might try the lamb and oatmeal in that brand, again, and see if I can get away what that one for him since i don't truly like feeding him soy, since it's a little bit harder to digest that protein than others, but he's never been so itch free, and he loves the food. It's about $32-$38 dollars for a 30lb bag, i think.

He poos a lot less now, too. Daisy, my beagle, has a bit of a sensitive stomach and her poo has fluffed out a lot. Not runny, but just fluffy and very soft. I plan to add some probiotics to the food if i stay on this one, to help her out. She did really well on Holistic Select, but my work doesn't carry that one, and i get a discount so...lol

Overall though they are doing well, and Bowser is sooo much better. He has a lot of allergies.
