Default Freds surgery

My Best Friend Fred has an eye problem that has been on going for 6 months or so and today they told us that next monday they would be taking it out. I am soooo scared. He had some Glaucoma in both eyes but now a tumor has formed behind the eye. He has been blind in the eye for about a month now. Again i am so scared. Fred will be 13 in January. I have his brother Walter and he shows no signs of this at all. They are 1 litter apart. How do I handle this?

The best way you can. I had a horse whos eye we removed because of a tumour, she dealt with it amazingly. We chose to have the socket stitched up so as not to look at a hole however some folk have a false eye put in. Personally im too squeemish for a false eye but its up to you. If he has been blind in it for a month then he should cope fine but it may take you some time to get used to it. God luck to you both x

Yes, good luck to you and Fred. Dogs are very resilient and adapt well. Proof? Look at Basset Hound Hank who lost his eyes to glaucoma not too long ago. His Mom visits this board sometimes, so do a search and look at some of her posts.

In the meantime, we wish you both well.

not sure what yourt concern is the tumor, fred beimg blind or perhaps walter is next. At 13 it is not the typical age for a genetic form of glaucoma which boades better for walter. Bandit the begeal while not gaucoma had Sards which causes sudden blindness she adjustest to living in two different house out of the year going in and out of the dog door and down five steps etc.

We also have a wonderful lady who fosters for Ohio Basset Rescue who's adopted girl lost both eyes (removal due to glucoma swelling) less than a month apart...and she said that she did fine, in fact her neighbor could not tell that she was blind at all and acted just like her other bassets.

the one thing she did, which I thought was a good idea was hang windchimes by the back door (where the dogs came in) so that she could find her way if she would have ever got disoriented while out in the yard.
We will be sending prayers and healing drool your way for your sweet guy to make a wonderful recovery.
