Default Recall

Recall mmmmm.... not a basset's strong suite. One of my hounds is pretty good for a basset, the other is really poor.

I have had a good look around at techniques. Does the lunge line work?

Hector's recall used to be fantastic when he was younger, notice I said "used to" I found as he got older (he's now 1) it got worse.

The two rescues I have come on command, i think its something to do with not wanting to be left outside or dumped again! My first Basset Chloe however, went through puppy and extended class and came on command in class, but the pistol, had selective hearing outside the class that got worse with age!

Am working with Barney every day on his recall. Even with treats, he only comes about 25% of the time. He's really spooky.....just sits and looks at me and you can just see that he's wondering if it's worth his effort. Don't think he's lazy....just extremely selective on where he is going to be energetic. Never heard of a lunge line....what is it?

I would recommend the following

Really reliable recall

How to Teach Your Dog an Emergency Recall

DEPOSITS INTO THE PERFECT RECALL ACCOUNT

By lunge line, I assume you are talking about a long lead. When it cones to recall training I thing a lead becomes a crutch and a problem because it is too hard to fade. That is you tend to end up with a dog that has a great recall on-lead but not one when off lead which is when you want a strong recall. IMHO it is best to start off training without out the lead in the first place. and control the distraction and environment so you have A high likelihood of success in the first place and not come to depend on the long leash as a means of "enforcing the recall"

now by lung line you are reffering to a restrained recall, that can help build recall speed but does nothing for reliability

I turn and run in the other direction, laughing hysterically. It works, but my neighbors won't come near me.

I will admit to doing that on more than one occasion, seems to do the trick but can be embarrassing.

for dog that like the game of chase, running after them only encourgages the move out further running away from them encourages to come to you. Works with 90%+ of all dogs. of course you do not hasve to laugh hystarically if you don"t want too.
