Default Hello From Red Velvet Dolly

Hey gang.. I'm new and wanted to say Hello..
I have a female Basset named Dolly and she's the love of my life for the last 6 years..
My wife and I bought her from a local pet store and we had some ruff times with her the first couple of years.
She had a bad case of Kennel cough and was very sick with throwing up and just plain feeling awful for the first few weeks after we got her home.
Lots of Dr. visits and a few times we thought we were going to have to put her down.
But Lo and behold she manages to pull through with alot of love and caring from mainly me since my wife works on the road alot of the time.
I refused to except putting her down was the only solution.. Since then.. she has been the best dog I have ever had..
I've trained her well and believe this.. She never bays or even barks for the matter which is odd for a Basset.. But she's my best friend and always a joy to spend time with..
I have the worst time with her right ear though.. I clean it all the time and put medicine in it a few times a week but I can never fully get the infection completely gone.
Anyways.. Glad to be apart of your forum and look forward to your stories and sharing mine..
Hello from Florida from me and Red Velvet Dolly!!

Oh my, how cute are you, Dolly?! Glad you are feeling better (sounds like you have a good family!) and welcome to the forum.

Those are some great pictures; can't wait to see more. I am such a sucker for that head-tilt thing that they do. Gets me every time

Hello to you and Dolly. Yes a basset will get in your heart and never leave. Your girl is very cute. Sorry you had such a ruff time of it.

About the ear problem I feel your pain. It took me 2 1/2 years to get my Turtles cleared up and some times I still worry but they have not been red and itchy for several months now. I had the yeast cleared up but she had a very hard bacteria to kill and that was what was so hard to take care of.

What medications and what food are you feeding her? Has the vet done a swab of her ears?

Welcome! Miss Red Velvet Dolly -- you look just like a beautiful Southern Belle in your first picture..... have you ever thought Miss Dolly may have an allergy to something which causes her ear problems... it could be grain or corn in her food. If you can try a gran/corn free diet and see if that helps.

What a beauty she is!!!! I wish that they would pass a state wide law against selling these pups in stores. There are fewer now than there was, but have a long way to go. Keep posting the pics...such a cutie.

I agree with you Barneys Mom. Recently the city of Brampton in Southern Ontario and a city Richmond in British Columbia passed bylaws banning the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores. Maybe the idea will catch on....... that being said Miss Red Velvet Dolly -- we are very happy your Mom and Dad found YOU! You look pretty special to us!!!!!

do you know what tipe of infection ie yeast and/or bacteria and if so what type of either? one treatment does not work for all types of infection if uou don;t know it is worth having a culture done and then it can be tested for resistance at the same time.

also keep on mind that ear infection especial yeast based infections which are the most common often are secondary to other skin issues like allergies or seborrhea she does not have dandruff per chance?

Here's a list of her meds.. But from what the vet says she has a problem with yeast. I feed her Beneful wet mixed with Nuta pro dry.. I've changed her diet over the years and she seems to be doing better with what I'm feeding her now even though we tried eliminating corn and grain products for a few months.
Meds:
Treaderm 15 ml ~drops
Dynotic 8ml~ drops
Antiseptic Flush
Otibiotic ointment
Keflex for yeast

Mikey.. She has a good healthy coat and I guess like most Basset's it feels slightly oily to the touch.
With her yeast problem she has a odor that sometimes is very strong. I believe it comes from her ear problem because it decreases when I clean her ears real good.
She is also not spaded.. I wanted to keep her from any surgeries because of her health since she has always had issues with things..
I'm told she was the runt of her litter, but she weighs in at a even 50 lbs.
She eats good and has alot of energy.. I'm blown away at how strong she is if she feels like playing rough with me..
I sit on a porch swing with her alot and she will run at full speed and jump in the air and land in my lap on the swing.. Really funny and playful dog!!

Has anybody else ever had their Basset after they drink water skid both front and back feet like dogs do when they go to the bathroom?? Dolly does every time she drinks.. It hilarious to watch.. water drives her nuts for some reason!!
She is a comical dog.. she watches me through the sliding door and if she wants my attention she will tap the window gently one time with her paw!
And she does talk some.. Kind of like if I'm kissing on her and telling her "It's OK" she kind of whines and makes sympathetic noises! LOL
Anyways.. I'll post some more pictures for you guys in the future..
Thanks again for the welcomes!!
Dolly on Kentucky Derby Day.. Yes she had her hat on!!
